i have an 86 f250d 4x4.........heres the story.I changed out the fuel selector valve with a universal one.I know i didnt get the wires hooked up properly...but it ran.I Needed the truck and since it ran good i drove it out about 5 miles with no issues.Stopped and started it a few times...(.it was hard to start...it normally is for the first time). Then in the process of driving it in the field it just died and will not start.I have new glow plugs and i live in texas so i dont think its that.
i am about to go pour a little diesel in the carb and see what happens. Also i am going to correct the wires(didnt think it was that since it ran good)Thought maybe my fuel pump went out...my fuel pressure guage is the kind that you screw on (modern stuff) and i dont even know what type of pressure it has.Ive never really got the truck past working the bugs out stage yet and its my first diesel.I wasnt sure what all i was overlooking...........any ideas/pointers etc is appreciated.
hold on, Dont' pour diesel in where the air cleaner is. That is a trick only for the pre fuel injected gassers. You don't have a carberator. Diesel will only ignite with the proper spray from the injectors.
Here is a good place to start.
Does your engine turn over fast enough that you can't count the revolutions?
Do you have fuel at the shrader valve (the tire valve looking thing on the top of the fuel filter)?
From the way you speak it could be a fuel dilevery issue, but Air intrusion on the fuel return lines is very common on these trucks and can strike at anytime as it did me recently. The return lines are the neoprene rubber lines/hose or whatever material it may be, runs between each injector, NOT the steel lines. There are little plastic caps over each injector with 2 O-rings on each injector. They have a common problem of eventually letting air and will cause a lot of wear on your starter if you purge the air out with it everytime. How long did the truck sit not running when you parked it? And did you get it started when you came back out? If so, how long did it take it to start? Did the engine sound like it was turning over normally with starter?
well....i didnt see these post til now....I went back out to the truck and i poured some diesel in the carb.(its a carb to me ) and it fired right up,maintained an idle and from then on started back up easily.I did some brush work that i was doing...starting stopping, pulling cut limbs/logs etc.....i never had anymore problems out of it.
It did set up for about a month even a little longer.
As far as the schrader valve i honestly didnt even know that i had one....Thats why i didnt bother getting my fuel pressure guage out because i didnt have a way to connect the lines...or so i thought.
When i bought this truck the lines to the injectors leaked.....I replaced the lines and the o rings. If it ran then i cant imagine them causing a problem now.
There would have been air in the lines(replaced the selector valve.I cut the hard plastic lines and connected it with fuel hose) but i assumed that it would have worked itself out driving the 5 miles.
The smallest leak will cause you problems. One place to check is the return line caps. Its a common area for air to sneak in.
Another big one for our 80's models is the water separator on the firewall. Its commonly suggested to bypass it. Mine is bypassed and i havent experienced any ill effects....
the water separator has been by passed.I was debating if i needed to fix it.
I will check around the return lines(assuming thats under the hood and what connects to the injectors...should be a very snug fit but will check on it.
Do these things have a choke? or an accelerator pump of some type?-----i would go and look but i had to leave the truck at the other location.
No, no Choke. There is no accelerator pump. You have an Inj. Pump. and a, I call it a high idle solenoid on that for fast idle when cold. But air has been a serious issue at times, and as the others guys said, get new caps, O rings, hose and bypass the water separator.

Dude!!, you really need to do some reading before you do much more on your truck. Forget everything you know about gas engines with a diesel , except maybe the alt and starter.
ive been playin with my first diesel to its a 94 7.3idi turbo. i found wen i changed the fuel filter i had to loosen each injecter one at a time until fuel was leaking out of the line. as for the valve selector i put a new one in mine and cant get fuel from the reartank any ideas.
Always pre-fill any filter that screws on in a vertical-threads up-position. Oil, fuel etc. If it is not sucking air somewhere, you can spin filter off, fill and spin back on with no bleeding at lines. I have done a few. If the low pressure lines/o rings are causing a leak off you may have to bleed inj. lines on filter swap.
