carb
I recently replaced mine on my `85 F350 with 460. I went with an Edelbrock 1406. This is a non-emissions 600 cfm carb. Edelbrock offers remanufactured versions of their new carbs and I purchased mine from Summit Racing for about $180. I went with a non-emissions carb because I have removed all emissions devices and advanced my cam timing to the pre-emission position.
I looked at the Holly line too but decided on the Edelbrock for several reasons. First off I did not want to go with a direct replacement Holley because it was very pricey (over $400 if I remember correctly) and it was an emissions carb. The 1850 model line from Holley is comparable to the Edelebrock 1406. But, the Holley carbs are more difficult to keep in tune and changing out jets and the like is more work. Every motor will respond a bit differently to a carb so making changes to the fuel mixture is a high probability. The Edelbrock is much easier to do this. The Edelbrock carb is somewhat of a spread bore design in that the primaries are a bit smaller than the secondaries. It is designed to work on a square bore manifold, but with the smaller primaries it will be more responsive off idle and should provide better gas mileage. Lastly, I did not go larger in cfm because my motor is a low rpm engine and I figured the Ford engineers are pretty good at specing the right size carb.
I have been very happy with the Edelbrock and strongly recommend it.
Good luck,
Mark
