I was up at my dad's house changing the oil in my truck and ran out of plan old valvoline 10w30. My dad had a case of shell 10w30 he picked up on saled when advanced auto parts bought out trak (trash) auto here in MD. I opened up the shell quart and whew!!! It stunk like sulfur! I sniffed the valvoline quart to see if it smelled as bad too, but it didn't. So for what it's worth, I would guess that the shell has more sulfur and would evaporate easier.

I would be glad to get you some data on the two oils but I will need to know which Valvoline oil do you normally buy, which Shell oil did you put in and it's API rating? Both companies make price point products and good products. Also, what year and engine is the truck?
It was the regular valvoline in the white can, maybe all-climate or something like that. The shell was the same thing, just the basic, bare-bones 10w30. I would be interested to look at the specs. I was interested that they smelled so differently coming right out of the bottle. The shell smelled much more like gear oil and yellowstone national park.
I also saw that Chevron Supreme has a different cracking process or refining process which might give it an edge up. I am going to go check into that too. I don't really use an oil loyally. I was using pepboys brand 15w-40 in my old VW for awhile, which I heard was made by valvoline, and lately I have been using valvoline in my truck. I think the best part about valvoline though is that they have a nice website that details how to do many repairs and maintenance procedures, as well as performance mods.

Basic oil with basic additive packages. Nothing remarkable here but price point products. I noticed your reference to Chevron Supreme. It's not even close to being the same product. It is a Group III (semi-synthetic, legally a synthetic) with an above average additive package that now contains about 50 ppm moly. Considering it is available everyday at Walmart for $1.08 a quart it is the deal of the day. Considering the mileage on your engine, if you are using oil betwen changes, you may want to move up to a 10w-40 or heavier oil. As engine mileage goes up so should the weight of oil.
that's good to know about the heavier oil weight on high mile engines. My dad has a diesel car, so there is always plenty of 15w-40 around his house, and some 10w40. does the higher viscosity in an older engine help fill in the growing gaps in the metal due to wear?
wouldn't you know it, my rear main is dripping too. I added some of that stop leak from the store... I think it's full of ester to get it to stop leaking. I think there is another trick too with RTV and tightening up some bolts, but I am not sure what that trick is.
