Hello, newbie here

Hi folks, thanks for maintaining this informative site.

I have a '68 F250 Ranger Camper Special (reg cab, long bed) that has been in storage for several years. About 10 years ago I replaced the original FE 360 With a 428 PI from a 68 Galaxie cop car, upgraded it for towing with an RV cam, Mallory distributor, 750 Holley DP, Edelbrock performer manifold and HD C6 trans. I used the truck for a few years until buying an F350 Powerstroke for towing and put the '68 out to pasture.

I'm now thinking of taking it out of storage and fixing it up (paint, interior etc) since I don't tow much anymore.

Is there a reference site where I can decode the VIN to determine the axle ratio etc?...I'm not sure what is is now and would like to swap in a posi-trac unit (been stuck on wet grass several times) and possibly go to the higher geared axle for better MPG's. Also, what is the difference between a standard F250 and the Camper Special? Heavier springs? Dual gas tanks standard?

Thanks in advance,

John

I have a '68 Camper Special and am pretty sure they all came with 3.73 gears. If there's not a tag on the rear end you can jack it up and count the drive shaft revolutions while you rotate a tire one full turn. I think the options were 4.10 and 3.54. I don't know about the heavier springs but mine has the brackets that shorten the springs when a bunch of weight is put on it. Dual gas tanks are standard with the Camper Special.

The metal build tag on the driver's door contains all the truck info. If it is original (door) it will tell you the axle code of your differential. My 69 F250 has a Dana 60 with 4.10 ratio...for getting heavy loads moving. Check your door tag.

Thanks for the info guys. The truck is stored out of state, but I'll have my niece get the data off the door plate and run it by a VIN decoder I found on Google.
