MPG
i was wondering does tire size make much of a difference on gas mileage?
i have an 05 6.0 that i just got about a month ago and i was expecting to get better gas mileage than i do.
im getting about 12mpg but i do have 35" tires
any feed back would be great.
But seriously, you didn't give much info. You get 12MPG diesel mileage doing what? Town, highway, combined?
I barely get 10mpg with 100% city driving. I usually get at least 16mpg on the interstate, depending on my right foot.
Bigger tires definitely burn fuel. Especially when they get up around 35".
1) If the speedometer/odometer were not re-calibrated for the larger tires, the odometer will show less miles than actually traveled.
2) Larger tires weigh more (sometimes a lot more if an M/T or other burly tire). It takes more energy to accelerate a heavy tire. Impacts city (start/stop) mpg more than highway.
3) Larger tires present more windage and aerodynamic drag. Impacts higway more than city.
4) Many larger tires are of a softer carcass design, which results in greater rolling resistance.
In my experience, the typical 35x12.5 will cost you about 2-4 mpg compared to stock sizes.
