I know the hard start/white smoke issue has been beat to death, and I have done some searches on here already, but figured I would post up something because my issue doesnt match any of the searched threads.
Heres the issue. I have no loss of power as far as I can tell. No strange sounds other than it seems a bit more injector noise than normal, but only in the DP 80econ tune. Im not even sure if there is an issue, but because it has happened repeatidly, and does not seem "normal" I figured Id ask. When I start up, after waiting for the wait to start light to go out on first start up of the day, I get about 2 seconds of white smoke out of the tail pipe. It is rarely thick, more like a haze, but there have been a few times when its sat for a couple of days where it has come out thick. It seems to me that this is not normal, and I am wondering whether or not it is something to be concerned about, or whether it can simply be something easily explained or fixed. I have not been able to smell the smoke, but it is something that happens routinely on the first start of the day. Once it has been brought up to operating temp once, then it will not smoke again, but after sitting all night it has smoked daily on start up.
CLIFFNOTES
short white smoke (1-3 seconds) on first start up of the day. No other symptoms other than maybe increased injector noise.
Oh and it seems like my MPG has gone down the drain, but ive been doing a lot of short driving around town so this might explain that.
If your injector O rings are starting to go bad, they can drip into your cylinders at night. So when you go to start the truck that would explain the few seconds of white smoke. The oil is being burned off of your piston tops at startup. Remember when your cylinder heads are cool, they contract making your oil seals "looser" which gives the oil a better chance to drip into your cylinders. Seems from what I keep reading #8 is always the culprit. But don't quote me on that.
thanks what I was thinking. Is there any serious harm to my engine that this would cause? or is it simply more of an inconvenience? I'm debating on the priority of this repair. I was planning on hopefully installing new injectors (stage 2's hopefully) in the next couple of months and if it was something that could wait that long I would simply wait and fix it when I put the new ones in.

I don't think this is the case because it would also have to leak past your coppers.
I'm thinking plain ol' bad glow plug or two. Or three. I don't know where "Ellensburg" is, but this time of year the glow plugs may not help initial start that much, but do help burn fuel more completely on startup. That white smoke you're seeing is most likely unburned fuel.
As for the injector noise, throw some 2-cycle or Diesel Kleen in there on your next fillup, if you don't already. Either will quiet those injectors down some.
Ellensburg is in central washington...and ive been thinking its time for GP's for awhile anyways...so maybe its time to put in an order to clay and get them switched out. Might as well switch out to a stancor while im at it.
I remember reading somewhere that if you deleted the AIH you could switch the relays so as to have a new "ish" GP relay...this true?

Mark
I agree with Mark. sounds to me like a glow plug or two. My truck gave out a white puff of smoke every first start up for months when I was in chilly Houston Tx last winter. It's never happened here in FL. and when I returned to FL it stopped smoking in the morning again.
2 stroke, or DK is also a good idea in my mind. Its not magic pixy dust, but it will do your injectors some good.
I have been using a quart of 2 stroke in every tank for almost 20k
