Opinions Wanted

I'm about to do an air filter replace. Two schools of thought I've heard are from the K&N camp and the Stay Stock paper element guys. The Argument is "yea sure, K&N Breathes better, but, it doesn't filter as well" The counter argumemt is " K&N Adds more power, better mileage and the difference in filtering in insignificant, especially in light if increased power and mileage"

Anyone care to chime in?

The only valid reason to put a K&N filter on a vehicle is if you can not get the correct stock paper filter in your local area. My '05 MINI Cooper convertible 5sp manual and my '90 Isuzu Trooper II V6 both fall into this category. I have seen absolutely no performance gains with the K&N filter. However I am saving the local landfill space!

And even then you wouldnt adjust the MAF curve unless the MAF is maxing out, which it wont from just a filter.

If you mess with the MAF curve enough you can seriously damage the engine.

BTW: Why did you delete your ABS like you stated in your signature? Did the module go bad or something? I've never heard of one failing before but if it wasn't bad I cant imagine why someone would delete safety equipment.

I look at it as a cost savings, some of the newer filters are pricey, yes the K&N might be 80 or 90 dollars, but if its a vehicle you are going to keep for awhile, how many times will you toss that dirty paper element filter ? I just wash my K&N, reoil and install....The have a million mile warranty on them.......I have NEVER owned one vehicle long enough to put a million miles on it! Just Saying............

Replace the thing with another stock Donalson filter, with the Powerstroke. A number of reasons for that. K&N has a reputation for allowing enough dust and debris by to dust your turbo, that's just for starters. The Donaldson does its job very well, particularly in dusty environments, and will support airflow for 500HP. You will not see a mileage difference in any intake or exhaust system you install on your truck, that will justify the investment.

When you're out the cost of a turbo, you'll reconsider the "savings" of the K&N. I replace my air filter every 45K, not because it needs it, but because I see it as best practice. One last thing, that million mile warranty from K&N will only cover the filter and intake, not the damages that a bad filter will cause on the 6.0L.

I had over 100,000 miles on my old 5.4L with a K&N filter. More power and increased mileage?? If any, it was miniscule. It sounded pretty cool. And I never bought an air filter in the 5 years I had the truck. Keep it cleaned and oiled, and it works as advertised (except for the power and mileage claims).

I won't use one on my 6.4L PSD. I don't want to take any chances of screwing with the warranty.

I have a K&N in my explorer I did not notice any improvement with mpg's or hp. I am also leary that the K&N must stay wet in order to filter.

My 6.0L psd in my f250 will always be a stock filter too much technology in that filter to replace it with an "upgraded" one.
