brake job troubles...
I take off the front right tire and notice there is no inner pad and the pistons have been in contact with the rotor. The pistons themselves are filled with metal filings and it looks like someone took a hacksaw to them and cut a 1/4 inch or so off them. There was a clip jammed up under the caliper sideways.
This was my first ranger brake job, I do them all the time for my friend's jetta.
I went ahead and just changed the pads, discarded the mangled clip and hoped for the best.
It worked fine all weekend, but on my way to work monday morning the brakes locked up and stayed that way. I was able to put it in reverse and drive 10 feet or so. I put it back in drive and got it into a parking lot when it happened again. I left it there and called a cab.
I called the dealer, they say its going to cost me 700-800 bucks. They want to do pads, rotors, calipers, bearings, etc.
First question, anything at all I can do without spendning any money? ANything I should check? I'm fairly handy and think I could tackle a full-on brake job if I had the chiltons book. Are brake jobs that tough?
Chris
New rotors and calipers are not that expensive and the job is easy, the hardest part is bleeding the brakes. Get yourself a manual and do one side at a time if you fell comfortable doing it. Never take a chance with brakes, anytime somethings not right fix it properly the first time.
$60.00/rotor x 2
$50.00/caliber x 2
$50.00 for pads x 1
$50.00/inner and other bearings plus seals x 2
I don't think you have to replace the bearings.
