I have found a donor rolling 4x4 chassis for my '71 F250 2wd. Before I buy it, what are some things I should look for? Here's what I know. D44/D60 axles, AT (C6, I guess, was anything else offered in early 70's?), t-case in good condition. I understand that the autos did not use the NP205 t-case, is this correct? Frame is supposedly in good condition. No power steering, but I think that's the way they all came, right? Can I use my 2wd power steering box? I don't think so, but wanted to ask.
He does not know the exact year of the frame, but said it is early 70's. Are there any concerns about the years? I mean will a '73-7? frame work without problems?
I would hazard a guess this is probably a F250 with that set up.

For 68-72 I think
F-100 = no power steering
F-250 = power assist
Then 73-79 = power steering

Ideally, with a min. of hassle, a 68-72 frame would be good. But, with a good frame and matching drivetrain for cheap money it would not matter much to me at least. You can always weld up cab mounts. Though I think 68-72 F-250s had special cab mount bushings.

No, but, to add power steering and disc brakes you are much better off with this set-up, especially if you are getting the axles and drivetrain.
Thanks, rebocardo. Good info. I ran the vin, but it was very hard to read, so I am not sure I got it right. It says its a 1975 f250, but what I am curious about is which digits in the vin indicate year? If they are the digits in question, then maybe it's something else. If they are not, then it's a 1975.
It has closed knuckles on the d44 and had power assist, but that was parted out. When did they stop the closed knuckles on f250?
closed knuckles were phased out in 76 and i think maybe some late 76's may have rece'd the open knuckle type axles. power assist was converted over to regular ps in mid year-77.....fd
Thanks Fatdaddy. So are the closed knuckles any good? I am not going to be hard core wheeling, just forest service roads and snow. Can it be converted to open knuckle? I plan to upgrade to front disc anyway, so if I could make a change I will.
