Hey guys i just picked up a 1991 F150 4x4 manual trans, BW 1356 and the speedo is dead. i removed the vss and the driven gear was damaged so i dropped the driveshaft and pulled the cone off the rear output shaft and found the drive gear loose on the shaft and free spining there was no ball bearing but the c clip was behind this.
The output shaft were the drive gear goes is smooth there is no location for a ball bearing to ride.
What am i missing?
Mine did the same stopped working. I changed the VSS nothing. Ended up the cable popped off the back of my gauge. Mines a 90 im not sure how 91 is but it's an idea you could check.
pull the gear off the output shaft and the clip as well. put the tranny in neutral and spin the shaft until you find the dimple where the ball bearing goes. That dimple should be there. If you find it then slide the gear on with the open part aiming towards the rear. line it up with the dimple and install the ball bearing. slide the gear over the ball bearing. Install the clip. I just learned about this a few weeks ago. PO must have had it apart at one time and had installed the gear backwards. I installed it the like that and it slid back off in 60 miles. Spun it around and it has been working perfect since.
Great thread guys, Im right in the middle of working a speedo problem and it sounds
like I may need to pull that tail shaft housing. This is a matter of pulling the drive shaft, getting the 5 bolts out and pulling the thing off correct?
I ordered a driven gear but, I'm not so sure this will be the fix. It did look pretty worn but not damaged at all. Too bad theres not a way to check the drive gear without pulling the tail housing.
