I'm pulling my parts truck apart and the fairlain GT 390 motor is in incredibly great condition. It's still getting a total rebuild but it's looking like I'll be saving a ton of cash on the machining.
I'm not looking to make a high rpm motor. I think 4,500-5,000rpm's would be my max. I'm thinking a summit street strip cam kit. It's specked between the eddlebrok performer and rpm kits. The pushrods look perfect but I havnt measured them yet. I'll take them to work to do that. I don't have a caliper long enough at home. I'm planning for a double roller kit, high volume oiler and maybe some of the oiling mods I have read about. Oh yea. I'll do some port cleaning. Not gringing away at them. Just cleaning them and gasket match maybe.
nice please post what you do , i just picked up a t bird 390 for my 68 and plan on doing a budget build . like you said port match heads ,mild cam etc.
i am just getting new push rods the better ones are like $50 a set ,small price to pay .
I'd lean towards the Edelbrock RPM manifold (7105) and also upgrading to an Edelbrock aluminum water pump. The basic recipe should also include a 600-650 cfm carb, headers, and dual exhaust using 2.25 or 2.5-inch tubing.
Other tidbits to consider includes electronic ignition, a phenolic carb spacer, and.... hehehehe.... a "small" shot of NOS.
