Differential Fluid - DEALER ONLY ?!?!
Folks,
I'm needing to change all my trans / diff / gear fluids soon.
I would like to replace them with the Mobil1 Synthetics.
Mobil 1 said that AutoZone was one of their distributors in my area.
When I checked with them - the guy brought up my Explorer's specs - and it said "must be obtained from dealer."
I have a 98 Explr / 4.0 SOHC / XLT 4x4.
3 questions:
- Is the dealer the only place to obtain the correct fluids (there seems to be so many variations - don't want to get it wrong)
- Has anyone used Mobile 1 in for this vehicle (for ALL trans/diff areas)? If so...where did you obtain them and what is the correct product # for Trans / both differentials / and transfer case?
- If Mobil 1 does have correct products - is there any advantage over Ford OEM ? (from what I understand, later model Explorers have 100% synthetic already in these areas)

I HAVE A 1996 EXPLORER WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION AND 4 WHEEL DRIVE. I RECENTLY DID A TRANS FILTER CHANGE AND USED MOBIL 1 ATF FLUID IN BOTH MY TRANNY AND MY TRANSFER CASE. IT WORKED GREAT AND MY TRANNY HAS BEEN SHIFTING SMOOTHLY EVER SINCE. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE DIFFERENTIAL FLUID MYSELF. IF U FIND OUT LET ME KNOW.
