Going to be doing mine next week, well fluid film not oil but your post got me wondering. I get the brake parts, but why exhaust, header etc? I mean ya it's going to smoke and burn off but is there a reason other than that annoying burn off to avoid spraying oil or another protecting oil type substance on my headers or exhaust?

I don't think so, what's it gonna do? I read about it and it's just some kind of light sealer and anything you put on hot pipes is just going to burn off unless it's hi-temp header paint or something.............impossible to damage. Getting something like that on rotors would cause havoc with the brakes and may be hard to get it all out of the pads too.

Spray everything except the exhaust, then use brake clean on the rotors. I've used the same cheap hvlp gun from harbor freight for about ten yrs. I use fluid film which isn't toxic and works fantastic. Our 05 dodge ram has no evidence of rust and that's driving on heavily salted roads about 5 months of each yr. Takes about 30 minutes. The product has halted or at least slowed the excursions rear rust which was present when I bought it.

Yes it will burn off, I just avoid it so I don't have to smell it for a few days. Its not to hard to avoid spraying whatever you are spraying on the exhaust.

This is definitely something I need to consider. After bringing my Ex up from Texas last December (and it having only been a TX truck up to that point), the frame was great but after one winter season here in MA there's already surface rust starting.

I already have the compressor and siphon gun...and I think I have enough waste oil. What would you guys suggest as a drop cloth to use under the truck? Something absorbing or just plastic?

I like the plastic tarp. I reuse mine every time.

I may give this a try as I have a compressor, paint gun, waste oil, drop cloth and 3 vehicles that I want to keep for a very long time.

If I lived anywhere that road salt was present, I would be doing this procedure.

Unless it was my "winter vehicle" (23 years in OH-10).

Bringing this thread back to life once again. I was wondering if anyone has tried doing this or what your thoughts are doing this to a truck that lives at the beach. Obiviously it works great for the salt, but I worry about how the sand would pretty much cover everything.

I have a jeep that went through the whole Ziebart process about 10 years ago - undercoating, rust proofing, etc....while the jeep body, paint and interior look great, the underside and frame are gone. Seeing this thread, I went out and purchased some fluid film and have to say that it is amazing. Rust literarily bubbles off. My concern lies within the remaining tacky residue and the super soft sand we have locally.

The Jeep is kinda my guinea pig right now, but I don't want to do this to the X if it could cause more problems down the road.

Any thoughts/prior use in a gulf beach situation?

Thanks,

Matt
