A little project

This will be an on going project for the next year to 2 years. I am in need of a new hauler for my car. My 89 f250 now is getting in rough shape. I had an 86 f150 that I started to redo until I bought my car. Now it just sits in piles all over at my dads shop. The 86 was a regular cab long box. I will be converting it to an extended cab with a flareside box. I like the look of the 86 front clip better than the 89 so I will be keeping that front. Powering this will be my 393 stroker that is now in my 89 but the carb will be coming off and it will be getting a Holley Avenger EFI. Behind the power plant will be a M5R2 5 spd and will be wrapped up with ford 9" rear. Still undecided on the ratio until I decide what size tires I will be running.

hanging suspension so i can figure out where I need to stretch the frame

Thats only part of it. The other side has my chrome plating operation and then theres another section that has my burn table and will soon have a verticle band say and some other goodies

got my axle pivot bracket today. Waiting on my Chassis Saver paint to come, then I can do the front section of the frame, (front cab mount forward). Then once I get my new radius arm bolts and urethane axle pivot and radius bushings, I can start putting the front end together

Would be interested to know how the M5R2 works behind an engine with that much torque. i thought that the Mazda transmission was too weak for any thing more than a 302. I have a 351 that I want to put in my '89 F250 (302, Mazda 5 spd) but was afraid the trans would not take the torque. Am I wrong in thinking that the M5R2 is the same trans. as mine?

Did I hear "Chrome Plating"???

The M5R2 probably won't hold up to a mild 351w, let alone a 393 stroker. IIRC, the M5R2 is only capable of handling 250lbft. Some guys are putting out way more than that with an M5R2, but must have luck on their side.

The ZF 542/547 will take the abuse, as long as you make solid shifts. The "S" means synchronized, "5" means 5 forward gears, and "42" or "47" means torque rating times 10, so the 42 is rated for 420lbft, and the 47 is rated for 470lbft. With the ZF you also have better choices in gear ratios and they are stump pullers off the line.

M5R2
1st: 3.90
2nd: 2.25
3rd: 1.50
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.80
Reverse: 3.39

ZF542 (Wide Ratio)
1st 5.72
2nd 2.94
3rd 1.61
4th 1.00
5th 0.76
Reverse 5.24

ZF547 (Wide Ratio)
1st 5.72
2nd 2.94
3rd 1.61
4th 1.00
5th 0.76
Reverse 5.24

The Close Ratio ZF's are for 7.3 Diesels over 8500lb GVWR.

Thanks for the info. This will be used for pulling a lot so I will want as much low end as I can get

Ordered some from spring parts from LMC(retainers, isolators, etc..) went to my dads shop and he had some black Chassis Saver so I will be able to get the front section of the frame painted except for the core support mounts until I get my new plates from JBG. the its time to get the pivot bushings and radius arm bushings and start putting the front together

We have used this Chassis Saver on quite a bit of builds at my dads shop, this stuff is well worth the $100 a gallon. Makes POR15 look obsolete. Once this stuff dries its never coming off
