Ok, so I have decided to start piddling around with my highboy again, and wanted to take the nasty tailgate off that came on the truck when I bought it. I have done some research on the internet but I'm stumped. The problem is, after I took the arms off of the top, I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the tailgate off of the bottom round part. From what I have read on the net, they say that you lift the tailgate to about a 45 degree angle and on the passenger side you can lift up and out and it should slide off. Problem is, I have tried this for the past hour with no luck lol.. Any advice?
im not sure what year the 45* angle trick started, but with my old 65 i had to remove the two bolts holding the "round thing" on. if you can do the 45* angle trick one of the bottom pivots will have flat sides and the tail gate itself will have a slot in it.
i just bought one and put it one. you HAVE to unbolt one of the round things "hinge" one the bottom. it is a hinge with a **** that fits into a pocket at the bottom of each end of the tailgate.
there should be two bolts holding it on. if you drop the gate, there is one you can get to from top, the other yuo need to get to from the bottom behind the bumper. once those bolts are out of the way, the hinge willl still be "attached" or pocketed with the gate, pull up gate on that side and you should be able to get it off.
