With Ford experiencing supply chain issues due to the turmoil in the East, I did some digging and found this sweet nav unit from Kenwood...does anyone have any experience tying this into the factory backup camera? Looks like a very slick system.
I would recomend calling an outfitter about this, In NH (where I live) I'd recomend calling Boomer McLoud. The guys over there have always had the answers I've needed reguarinding aftermarket A/V.
Also might try the find a dealer link on Kenwoods page, they may have a good dealer in your area.
I'm guessing the dealers in my area have no clue about this. I'm waiting to hear from an owner about this one. There just are not enough 2011's around here for these to be installed in.
Sgt, it is "voice" capable, and states integration with vehicle options (steering wheel controls, voice etc).
bartlanz- this is my first call this AM once someone opens, have a good spot here in KC, and I will call your reco as well...many thanks for this.
Additional thought on the cams, I suppose a guy could leave the factory cam in the mirror (premium sound w/o factory nav) and add another camera to the rear at a higher point so as to see more? I am going to toss on an ARE Z series cap, maybe between the brake light and the door?
This looks like a promising unit. I see it supports pandora and other like services. The pandora and similar features are listed as new on the 2012 build trucks. I wonder who is OEM'ing the Nav unit on the 2012? It sounds very similar to this description.
At the end of the day, I very much enjoy the Garmin nav interface, and would like the factory camera to display in the nav. I've called Kenwood, Crutchfield, and a half dozen private installers, no dice on the factory cam/Kenwood compatibility.
Any updates on nav backlog, and whether or not Garmin will be the interface (it is in the work solutions package).
That really sucks about the factory cam but then again, it's in my rearview mirror so I could care less. I'm sure I can find another cam or two to hook up to the Kenwood. Maybe one in the passenger seat for the wife........LMAO

Best I can tell, Sync dies with a vehicle that comes with factory Nav. There seems to be some conflicting info on if an aftermarket interface can bring Sync back to life with an aftermarket head unit though. At best, you will have a separate LCD screen to control Sync if that is important to you.
I like the idea of a good aftermarket nav head unit, but the integration elements always left me feeling like I was chasing my tail with this interface or that interface, plus the reliability aspects, etc.
I sprung for Factory Nav just to not have to deal with the hassles. Ironically, I am underwhelmed with it, and I usually use a 5" Dell Streak Android tablet running Co-Pilot software when I am serious about Nav and real-time traffic. That abortion of a system from Sirius leaves a lot to be desired.
I am going to build up an audio system around the factory nav with better speakers and an amp though. The 2011 factory head unit leaves a lot to be desired for tech enthusiasts, myself included.

I was set on getting factory nav... but after reading stuff on here im seriously considering not getting it and paying boomer to upgrade the entire system... for $2k+/- i bet they would do a sweet setup for me...

I am as well...and may do just what Sgt mentioned and set up a secondary camera. I did call boomer yesterday with the compatability question, very nice guys over there, they were going to dig into the research and call me back...if I don't hear anything by next wed, I'll call back and see what's up.
On the sync note...I have never owned a vehicle with Sync, but have driven many rentals (lots of travel for work), and have found it extremely frustrating. It can't understand my voice, and hijacks my iPhone as soon as I connect it...I need some more control! Now I know I can modify these features to be a bit more user friendly, but overall I'm less than impressed by the system.
As for the core sound system (speakers and sub), I can order the premium sound package without the nav and receive the same setup correct?
NStorm, I anxiously await your findings on this matter. One would think Alpine/Kenwood etc would have something that would be almost a direct plug-in. As I stated earlier, I will wait for a guinea pig before I do it
