What is the best type of oil to run in my newly rebuilt 400? The napa here in town is having a sale on mobile 1 oil for $4.99 a quart. Is this a good brand? About how many quarts would I need?
Also, what is a good ATF to run in my newly rebuilt C6? About how many quarts would I need?
For motor oil in an older engine, I always recommend Valvoline VR-1 Racing Oil. It has the highest ZDDP (zinc/phosphorus) content of any conventional motor oil and can be found at any parts store. Its ZDDP levels match Brad Penn Racing Oil (NOT PENNZOIL), which is a highly regarded motor oil in the performance industry. ZDDP is essential in non-roller engines and the majority of other conventional motor oils have been stripped of their ZDDP for environmental reasons. Also use a good oil filter such as WIX brand, as they offer superior filtering over Fram/STP/Motorcraft, etc.
For ATF, I spend the extra bucks and use B&M Trick Shift in all my automatics. An inline cooler is highly recommended to keep that investment safe.
I've been using Redline gear oils in my differentials & manual transmissions for years.
