7.3 Excursion hard start and codes issues

Hello, I've been googling my problems I'm having on my X and have gotten great info from this site. Thanks alot! I decided to join to get more specific information reguarding my 2000 7.3 Exursion. My problems are hard start, only starts when plugged up in cold weather. When started bad miss until warmed up. Codes 1316, 1211, 1271, 1272, 1273, 1274, 1275, 1277, 1278, 0284. I'm not a diesel mechanic, but I am mechanically inclined. After reading your forums I have purchased the AE. I've changed VC gaskets with wiring harnesses and ICP sensor due to oil leak in plug. After driving an hour on the interstate If I clear my codes and retest with the AE (KOEO, KOER, glow plug, and buzz) I get no codes. Performing CC test i get the PO284. In the morning before startup I get no codes but the buzz test is real quiet. Perdels after driving are all zeros except for # 1 cylinder .7 to 2.1 and #8 cylinder is 5.1 to 7.1. ICP 480 psi, ICP duty 4.69, Fuel pulse 2.53, volume fuel desired 6.2 mm3, mass fuel desired 5.7 mg. at idle. I understand the ICP readings but the fuel reading i don't know their requirements. I also hear a squealing sound in the engine compartment when i turn the key on until the fuel pump shuts off. I recently heard about a screen in the fuel bowl, would this clogged up screen cause any of these codes? Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to FTE!

Couple things to check and clarify.

What color CPS are you running?

ICP duty 4.69 ? 4.69%

If you are still getting that high of a percentage on number 8 I would call it into question.

Also, at idle or even with key on you should be about 11%-%14 duty cycle. The IPR can't go below 8.1%.

I went and rechecked just because I'm new at all this and I'm getting KOEO 14.84% ICP duty cycle and .21 V ICP volts .KOER 5.08% ICP duty cycle and .85 V ICP volts . 6.0 to 7.2 on #8 after the x sit 4 hours .

Last time I saw ICP that low while idling, the fuel pickup screens were clogged. If you drain the fuel bowl after running the engine, do you get 16oz of fuel?

Oops, I meant to say the last time I saw ICP duty cycle that low the problem was restricted fuel flow.

I have not tried that I will try it tomorrow .Do you know if the fuel bowl has a screen in it on the supply line? I was told it did after a friend heard the squealing noise in the engine compartment when I turned the key on and it squealed til the fuel pump stopped running .

I've been wondering if it was a fueling issue. I've only had my AE for a few days so I'm gathering more information than my head can process .I know it sets the 1316 ,1211 code around 55%throttle position 2300 rpm with about 2100 ICP psi these are averaged out over three days .When I hammer on it ,its like its pulling a load ICP spikes around 2800psi and slowly drops to around 2000 and the ICP duty cycle climbs all the way to 90% as long as I stay in it .All this happens 65 to 100mph .Then Ill get the 1271 ,2,3,4,5,7,8, codes but i also get them with out the hammering the throttle.

I would definitely check the screen in the tank like Greg suggested. It sounds like that likely is your issue.

Do the hutch and harpoon while you are in there.

Thanks Clay and gchavez,
I'll investigate the fuel system this weekend and post my progress .The old girl has 420,000 and getting 17mpg even though she's a little sick I'd still drive her anywhere .

The fuel filter element has a screen but it takes a bit to clog it up due to it's size. I presume you have been changing it every 15k miles or so, correct?

The more common cause for low fuel volume is the in tank mixing chamber/pickup assembly. When those screens get clogged, the fuel pump will squeal and you will hear an associated noise coming from the fuel bowl. That noise is the excess air being purged via the fuel pressure regulator valve. The fuel being returned to the tank is usually a mix of air and fuel so it makes a strange noise.
If you get a strong release of pressure when you open the drain, then the in tank mods are likely in your future.

If you get that far and suspect clogged in tank screens, you can confirm by getting a diesel fuel can and connect some fuel line to the back of the pump so it draws fuel from the can instead of the tank. If your engine idles and starts fine with ICP duty cycle around 14-15%...then it will be time to drop the tank.

Yes ,I change the filter every 3 to 4 months usually before each holiday if it needs it or not just to keep from having to do it on the road (peace of mind ).The screen I'm refering to is on the supply line going into the filter bowl .I was told to remove the supply line then remove the brass nut on the bowl and the screen was behind the nut (so I have been told). My pump sounds normal maybe running a little longer .The squealing sound is only coming from the engine compartment (makes you want to hold your ears closed at times). With 420,000 miles it wouldnt suprise me if the tank screen was clogged .Thanks for the info . Will the tank mod be the same for the excursion? Reading up on it it just talks about trucks ,are they the same? Using the AE is there any checks that I can do that might confirm the fuel issue ? It has some fuel reading on the program but I dont know what they mean .

I am not familiar with the Excursion tanks but I presume the procedure is similar. Unfortunately there isn't anything that AE can help with regarding the fuel flow. The reading you are seeing are calculated values based on other factors so it's not very helpful in this case.

There is not screen in the fuel supply at the bowl. Here is a link to the fuel bowl rebuilding procedure.
http://www.dieselorings.com/docs/FuelBowlRebuild.pdf

There is a screen on the intake side of the fuel pump but I don't think it's removable. You might be able to visually inspect the screen with the fuel pump removed. (not too sure about that though...)

Still not sure what the exact cause of the under hood noise might be. Glow plug relays can make an awful noise but I think the Excursions have the GP Module which might operate differently. I don't really know too much about that system since none of my trucks have those parts.

At this point I am curious to hear how much fuel comes out of the bowl when you drain it and if you discover excess pressure when you open that valve.
