So I had a nice long day of wrenching this past saturday. Pulled the high pressure oil pump to replace the leaking "non-serviceable plug." Got it back in, let the Loctite cure for 24 hours and fired her up Sunday afternoon to bring a pallet of shingles and other roofing mateials down to the Cape house. So far, so good....except the oil coming from somewhere else under my hood....but for now the HPOP is dry!

Also got some fender flares to cover up the rust on the rear wells. Check it out....

This is the oil pump still mounted on the truck

NO MORE VISIBLE RUST!!!

Good afternoon Massachusetts.

Looks good john, except now you need bigger tires to fill the wheel well holes.

I think about it a lot, but its close to $1,000 for bigger tires, and these only have 9000 miles on them. Also, I don't want to destroy my tranny, I've got the higher gears in the diffs (3.73)

I cruise at 72mph on the highway right at the fuel guzzling threshold for the 7.3L (1900-1950rpm) so having bigger tires would be nice, but i also dont want to burn my clutch plates out when it downshifts to pass people....i guess thats something the DP Tuner could easily deal with....

It basically just boils down to me not wanting to spend the money on new tires when I just bought these....having some 36's would be nice though.

Cops already love me...I bet they'd like 36" tires even more

I wire wheeled and put some roll on bedliner on the inside and outside...there is 2" wide foam strip that runs around the perimeter of the wheel well, holds water and you can guess what happens...here is a 'during' shot of the painting process

And painted...

Also note, the tan/brown color around the perimeter is factory primer...not metal discoloration.

the wet looking spots of clean metal are where its about to rust through (even more)

It makes me wonder if its worth doing rust mitigation/prevention. I have the last 7.3 made and I want to keep it, but keeping up with the rust/corrosion from all the salt and crap makes me wonder if its worth it
