Cutting power???

This may be normal for the truck to keep from hurting itself but not sure. This weekend I finally put this truck to the test and pulled my slide in camper with my boat behind it up i70 in Colorado past the continental divide to Lake Powell. To lake powell (west bound) the truck had plenty of power to spare...able to go whatever speed I wanted...I easily kept the rig at 75 and the fan kicked in twice and the oil temp stayed around 240 while climbing.....and btw the engine brake worked beautifully!!! (I'm sure that'll get some fired up) On my return trip (east bound) I was headed up and noticed much less power with the same heat being generated and a top speed of 60 with the truck floored. I weighed the whole rig once we got down to be 16k on the nose for a gcvw. I noticed my boost was not hitting max when I noticed this power drop....on a gradual decent I had all my power back on tip in...but not long after that I saw boost go from 32 ish back down to low 20s about the same time I lost a significant amount of power....any ideas out there??? The truck is a 350 long bed with 3:55 gears and no lights at all came on till my decent and then it went into regen. Truck has right at 10k on her and have only done one oil change and added 2 gallons of def.

wind, elevation, grade, ambient temperature could all be significant variables?

There were 35 MPH wind gusts from the West on Sunday in Denver.
(our plane spent a long time waiting to take off into that wind)

So, his driving home "East" should have been much easier.

I am not too familiar with how these turbos work on our trucks, but something needs to control the amount of pressure the turbo produces. On small airplanes a wastegate is used to regulate the amount of exhaust hitting the vanes.

What controls it on these turbos?

He reports seeing 30 pounds of boost - do other people get that much boost - mine only seems to ever get low 20's (f-450)

Right...my point is that he saw over 30 and then saw low 20s.

Altitude and air density will have an effect on the boost.

I was questioning whether a stock truck can generate 30 lbs boost?

There are many factors that determine how the engine operates, and many of these are temperatures of various components. The PCM will adjust engine output to ensure nothing gets broken, and I don't think this is a symptom of anything being wrong.

If the PCM has to react to a situation that's not within it's operating parameters it will throw a code and turn on the CEL. I'm willing to bet your truck probably got a bit warm on the return trip and had to back things down to keep temps at a safe level.

Thats kinda what I was thinking, cause now after my decent I had all my power back....just never got my fuel mileage back...due to the ridiculous winds. Sucks I lost alot of power when I really needed it but I'm glad the engine won't let it hurt itself. Woulda been nice if a message came across saying reduced power for xxxxx reason. Although I did notice the temp gauge is an actual gauge on this truck as opposed to the idiot gauge my 06 had.
