My 86 F150 302 w/ AOD has been starting and running fine. Tonight, when I went to start it, it just sat there turning over, but it never started. I've got a new starter in it, but due to a faulty starter solenoid, the starter has been left spinning for about 15 seconds after the engine started two different times. So....I'm not sure what kind of condition the bendix is in. Also, even though the starter is turning the motor (I can't tell if it's turning it as fast as it normally does), my tach is reading 0 RPM, which seemed kind of weird. I hear the fuel pump turn on when I turn the key to ON, I know that I have gas, and I reset the fuel inertia switch. The only other test that I can think of is to check for spark with a screwdriver at one of the plug wires, which I plan on doing tomorrow. Does anyone have any advice or ideas?
There is no spark at the plug wire, so I checked back at the distributor, also no spark. I swapped the coil with a friend's 86, and the coil is not the problem. Still no spark.
Dumb question, but is the ignition module the same as the ignition switch, or TFI, or something different? I just changed the ignition switch about a month ago.
Then I put a code reader on it, and it only gave error 67, which seems to probably be talking about the neurtral safety switch circuit being open. I'm not sure what to do with the neutral safety switch, and the Haynes manual doesn't show any detail for it on AOD tranny.
The switch on automatics is always on the L side where the shift lever/cable attaches. It's the same switch that activates the reverse lights, but if it was the problem, the starter wouldn't spin. It doesn't interrupt the ignition. Look in the wiring diagrams for your year.
The ignition "switch" is mounted to the top of the steering column inside the dash. The ignition "lock cylinder" is what you put the key in. The ignition "module" is what actually controls the coil, and it's mounted ('80-86) to the L wheelwell ('87-91) to the base of the distributor ('92-96) to the L inner fender under the hood hinge. All ignition modules from '87-96 were called "Thick Film Integrated" (TFI).
Well, the problem was indeed a bad ignition module. Once I got the special tool to undo the two bolts, it was a piece of cake to fix. Thanks for all the help!
