What is the correct fuel line diameter for the rubber hose that connects from sender unit to steel fuel line. It looks like 3/8 but my old hose is so swollen that correct diameter MIGHT be 5/16? I have the F-150 LongBed w/rear tank.
My 78 F150 4x4 is 3/8. Found this out when I bought a new sending unit and it had 5/16 fitting on it. My old one was 3/8. I just repaired the old sender and reused it. Took the new one back. O'reileys said thats all they had available.
In many cases, the line from the sending unit to the frame-rail line is 3/8", while the line between the pump and carb is 5/16". The longer line has the larger diameter so as not to restrict fuel flow along the length of the truck.
In either case, however, the best way to tell would be to fit a fresh line of both 5/16" and 3/8" hose over the sending unit barb and see which fits. A 3/8" hose will be very loose on a 5/16" barb. A 5/16" hose can fit over a 3/8" barb with some force, but the other way around will leak.
I would doubt the clear hose (fish tank style) hose at Lowe's is rated for fuel systems; plus it doesn't seem like it would be flexible enough, nor soft enough to seal with a hose clamp. Rubber fuel hose has worked for decades; no need to go off the beaten path.
Got it. It is 3/8", although at the parts store, some aftermarket sending units use a 5/16" barb, as 78PEB said. Man, getting that worm style clamp over the hose on the sending unit WITHOUT dropping the tank was a BIOTCH! If I wasn't small from running no way could I have wedged my frame between the differential and exhaust pipes (my truck has duals). Ended up using a nut driver with a universal on the end to help pivot the socket, and got the clamp tight. You can drop the tank an inch or so to get clearance if needed. everything else was easy, at least didn't have to drop tank. Thanks everyone for good advice.
