Another IDI back on the road.

I have a 93 with the factory turbo set up that I bought for $1000 to install my service box on. Month after I bought it I broke a valvespring, didn't realise what it was and kept driving it. Word to the wise if your engine developes a little ticking noise that kinda sounds like an exhaust leak, stop and pull the covers and check it out. I ran mine for two weeks like that then it dropped the valve resulting in some pretty serious damage. We had a known good 6.9 from a rolled pickup so instead of digging into the broken 7.3 I switched them out. Everything was pretty straight forward, I took the injectors and pump off of the 7.3 and put them on the 6.9 along with the turbo. Tested it last night and it seems pretty strong, seems to smoke more than the 7.3 (black), but maybe thats due to the samller displacement. Got some great info on here about the turbo IDI flywheel and also found some clutch differances through the years.

that's too bad about your 7.3l,but good to hear you got her back going.
be sure to adjust the fuel,as rolling coal isn't any good for anything.hurts the environment, but of course your wallet.there's no power to be found in black smoke.that just means there isn't enough air to burn all the fuel and lower fuel economy will be the result, because rather than helping you go forward,it's just going out the pipe.
it can send your exhaust tempts through the roof too.

I would fix the 7.3, a dropped valve & spring isnt that big of a fix.

doubt the fix is just a valve and spring now

valve falls usually takes something else with it
piston, the head, the cyl

besides that, all them fine lil metal peices travel the entire oil system

and drove it 2 weeks like that?
LIKELY
looking at a total rebuild to be reliable... if even possible is it feasible?.

valves don't generally just pop
metal fatiuge, over revved, faulty assembaly... try to figure out which so cna avoid it agin in teh future.

Yeah I only drove it for two weeks with a ticking noise going on, when it finally dropped the valve I pulled the cover. I'm gonna pull the head on the 7.3 and see what got tore up. Money was way to tight right now to tear into an engine anyway. By switching it only cost a couple hundred in some gaskets and it needed a new waterpump.

I have been trying for 3 years now to make a service truck on the cheap. First I got a hold of a 94 F250 gasser, dead for next to nothing. I got it running and everything checked out I thought, installed my box and found the trans was going out. Was fine empty, but the extra weight was too much. So I figured I would watch for a good used trans, only problem I had a fairly rare 5.8 / C6 . You don't just find a small block C6. So I sold that pickup, put the box on my 96 PSD, didn't like it, found this 93 for cheap. Now I don't even have a need or use for a service truck anymore. But I already had all the tools, compressor, and anything else I could need piled in the corner of the shop.

My Dad is the one that has made some sweet finds in the last couple years. Right now I know there is one 6.9 with a set of rebuilt heads in a pickup and a complete rolled 7.3 / 5spd/ 4wd pickup that he knew the guy and it was a good runner.

A friend of the family had the pickup that this 6.9 came out of. He was driving along on an icey morning and rolled the pickup in a ditch, he said it came to a rest on its side running and he instantly reached up and turned off the key. He said as soon as he turned the key off everything went numb. He had broken his neck and that movement paralysed him, he is about 30 years old now and in a motorised wheelchair.

Well he saved an IDI engine at the cost of his movement. I must say. Wow....
