Happy Memorial day

For all servicemen and women past and present, thank you from myself and my family. Say a prayer for all those deployed, may God keep them safe. I'm personally praying for a close friend who is currently deployed in Iraq. Thank you all I asked both my kids yesterday if they knew what this holiday was really about and not just another day off from school. I'm happy to say they both knew.

This email was sent to me by a family friend who really put Memorial Day into perspective. Sorry it is kinda long but I had to share:
I was asked to share my feelings on Memorial Day at church today. Here it is for you to read, delete or whatever. Gary

MEMORIAL DAY

GOOD MORNING! I THINK ALL OF YOU KNOW THAT TOMORROW IS MEMORIAL DAY. BUT, DO YOU KNOW WHAT MEMORIAL DAY IS? FOR MOST OF US IT'S A TIME FOR PICNICS, VISITING FRIENDS AND FAMILY, MAYBE SOME GOLF, MAYBE SOME TENNIS, IF YOU ARE A BEACH PERSON, IT'S THE START OF THE SUMMER SEASON DOWN THE SHORE.

MEMORIAL DAY USED TO BE CALLED DECORATION DAY AND WAS CELEBRATED ON MAY 30TH. IT WAS FIRST OBSERVED MAY 30, 1868. THE CELEBRATION DATE WAS LATER CHANGED. NOW WE OBSERVE IT ON THE LAST MONDAY OF MAY. IT WAS CHANGED PRIMARILY SO THAT WE CAN HAVE A LONG - THREE DAY - WEEKEND.

I BELIEVE THE TRUE MEANING OF MEMORIAL DAY WAS WEAKENED, EVEN LOST, WHEN IT WAS MADE INTO A THREE DAY HOLIDAY. I THINK THAT MOST OF US DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT WHY THE HOLIDAY WAS ESTABLISHED. IT'S JUST AN EXTRA DAY OFF FROM WORK, SCHOOL OR WHATEVER.

THE ORIGIONAL PURPOSE WAS - AND STILL IS - TO COMMERATE UNITED STATES MILITARY PERSONNEL WHO DIED - MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE - WHILE IN THE MILITARY SERVICE OF OUR COUNTRY.

MEMORIAL DAY IS NOT TO PAY TRIBUTE TO GUYS LIKE LOU, HARRY, BILL, JAY, ME OR ANYONE ELSE WHO SERVED AND IS STILL ALIVE TO TALK ABOUT IT. IT'S TO HONOR PEOPLE LIKE WILLIARD SOKOL AND HARRY STEWART WHOSE NAMES HAVE A STAR NEXT TO THEM ON THE PLAQUE BEHIND THE ORGAN AND PETE YIENGST. IT'S TO HONOR THOSE WHOSE BODIES ARE BURIED AT ARLINGTON AND OTHER CEMETERIES AROUND THE COUNTRY; THOSE WHO ARE BURIED ON FOREIGN SOIL; THOSE WHOSE BODIES STILL LIE SOMEWHERE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN OR SOMEWHERE IN FOREIGN JUNGLES OR WERE SO MANGLED AND DESTROYED THAT THEY WILL NEVER BE FOUND. MEMORIAL DAY IS TO HONOR THOSE WHO AREN'T AND CAN'T BE HERE TO TALK ABOUT IT.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE WE TALKING ABOUT? FROM SOME OF THE FIGURES I WAS ABLE TO GET OFF THE INTERNET, IT APPEARS THAT OVER 43 MILLION PEOPLE HAVE SERVED IN OUR MILITARY. WHILE SERVING, OVER 848,000 LOST THEIR LIVES IN BATTLE AND ANOTHER 437,000 LOST THEIR LIVES IN NON BATTLE RELATED EVENTS WHILE SERVING. THAT'S A TOTAL OF OVER 1.3 MILLION PEOPLE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES SO THAT WE CAN HAVE PICNICS, PLAY GOLF, GO DOWN THE SHORE AND SO FORTH.

MY PURPOSE HERE TODAY IS NOT TO EXTOL OR CONDEMN OUR WARS. THE PEOPLE WHO SERVED AND DIED DID SO BECAUSE THEY WERE DOING WHAT WAS EXPECTED OF THEM. DID I SAY EXPECTED? I THINK IN MOST CASES THEY DID SO MUCH MORE THAN WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN REASONABLY EXPECTED OF THEM!

MOST OF THIS LOSS OF LIFE WASN'T WHAT MOST PEOPLE WOULD TERM A "HEROIC" DEATH, BUT, FOR SURE, IT WAS DEATH NONE THE LESS. AND I BELIEVE, BY ITS VERY NATURE, IT WAS HEROIC.

KATHE & I RECENTLY VISITED VALLEY FORGE NATIONAL PARK. GEORGE WASHINGTON AND HIS ARMY STARTED THE WINTER ENCAMPMENT THERE WITH APPROXIMATELY 12,000 MEN. NOT ONE WAS KILLED IN BATTLE, BUT APPROXIMATELY HALF OF THEM SUCCUMBED TO DISEASE AND THE HARSH CONDITIONS OF THE WINTER. - IT WASN'T GLAMOROUS, BUT WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND, THEY DIED SO THAT WE COULD BE HERE TODAY.

I'VE READ SOME BOOKS ON IWO JIMA. IT WAS ONE OF THE FIERCEST BATTLES OF WWII WITH 4,500 OF OUR PEOPLE DEAD AND 24,096 OF OUR PEOPLE WOUNDED. - IT WASN'T GLAMOROUS, BUT WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND, THEY DIED SO THAT WE COULD BE HERE TODAY.

RECENTLY, I READ ANOTHER BOOK, THAT JAY GAVE ME, ABOUT SOME PILOTS WHO WERE SHOT DOWN AND CAPTURED IN THE PACIFIC DURING WWII. THEY WERE TORTURED, BEATEN, DECAPITATED AND EVEN CANNABILIZED. IT WASN'T GLAMOROUS, BUT WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND, THEY DIED SO THAT WE COULD BE HERE TODAY.

I COULD GO ON AND ON ABOUT WHAT OUR FELLOW CITIZENS WENT THRU. YOU HAVE ALL HEARD AND READ STORIES ABOUT THINGS THAT THEY DID. IT WASN'T GLAMOROUS, BUT WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND, THEY DIED SO THAT WE COULD BE HERE TODAY.

PERHAPS IT WOULD BE GOOD TO REMEMBER WHO THEY WERE BEFORE THEY BECAME THE PEOPLE WE COMMERATE ON MEMORIAL DAY. WERE THEY SOME HUGE, BLOOD THIRSTY WARRIORS WHO HAD BEEN BRED AND RAISED TO BE FIGHTERS LIKE THE GLADIATORS OF OLD?

NO - MOST WERE THE KIDS NEXT DOOR OR IN SOME CASES YOUR OWN KIDS. THEY GREW UP BASICALLY THE SAME AS WE DID. THEY LIKED THE SAME THINGS, DID THE SAME THINGS, WENT TO THE SAME PLACES. THEY WERE, IN FACT, ORDINARY PEOPLE CALLED TO DO AN EXTRAORDINARY JOB. AND THIS JOB BROUGHT THEIR LIFE TO A SUDDEN, VIOLENT EARLY END!

WHEN THEY GOT THE CALL EITHER FROM WITHIN AND ENLISTED OR WERE DRAFTED, THEY WENT THRU TRAINING THAT CHANGED THEM AND MADE THEM MILITARY PERSONNEL. THE VAST MAJORITY WERE JUST KIDS - 19 YEARS OLD OR SO. THEY WENT TO FIGHT FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE JUNGLES, IN THE DESERTS, IN THE MUD, IN THE AIR, ON THE SEA - FOR YOU AND FOR ME - AND THEY DIDN'T LIVE TO SEE THEIR 20TH BIRTHDAY. IT WASN'T GLAMOROUS, BUT WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND, THEY DIED SO THAT WE COULD BE HERE TODAY.

ON THIS MEMORIAL DAY AND EVERY MEMORIAL DAY, LET US PAY HOMAGE TO ALL THOSE WHO NEVER MADE IT TO THEIR NEXT BIRTHDAY SO THAT WE ARE ABLE TO ENJOY THE LIFE WE HAVE TODAY. WITHOUT THEIR SACRIFICES, WE COULD BE UNDER ENGLAND'S CONTROL OR JAPAN'S CONTROL OR FRANCE'S CONTROL OR SPAIN'S CONTROL OR GERMANY'S CONTROL OR RUSSIA'S CONTROL OR WHOEVER. FOR SURE WE WOUNDN'T ENJOY THE FREEDOMS WE HAVE TODAY!

WE OWE THEM A DEBT THAT CAN NEVER BE FULLY REPAID. BUT WE CAN REPAY PART OF THAT DEBT BY THANKING GOD FOR THEM, BY REMEMBERING THEM, BY PAYING HOMAGE TO THEM AND BY STRIVING TO LIVE BY THE IDEALS FOR WHICH THEY FOUGHT AND DIED.

SO, ON THIS MEMORIAL DAY, I SUGGEST THAT BEFORE WE GO TO A PICNIC, BEFORE WE GO TO PLAY GOLF, BEFORE WE GO TO PLAY TENNIS, BEFORE WE GO DOWN THE SHORE OR BEFORE WHATEVER, I SUGGEST WE TAKE A MOMENT TO THANK AND REMEMBER THOSE FALLEN HEROS. IN FACT, I RECOMMEND WE FALL DOWN ON OUR KNEES AND THANK GOD FOR THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR US.

REMEMBER, IT WASN'T GLAMOROUS, BUT WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND, THEY DIED SO THAT WE COULD BE HERE TODAY.

It was my honor to share it. Actually it was a great day, my buddy got to call me from Iraq and I talked to him for 1/2 hr, things are as good as can be expected for he and his team considering temps are up to 110*.
