Ok, so the truck is a 79 f100 351m, auto, 2wd. It started being a random thing every so often, it would start fine, but if you shut the truck off while it is warm, it would crank over very slowley. Today, it got soo bad that it wouldnt start. I got a jump and it started, but made a crazy metal clinging noise. I replaced the starter, solinoid, and added a 1,000cca red-top optima batterie. After installing the new parts, it still does the same thing. Also noticed that the teeth on the flywheel looked a little rough. If it matters i also just replaced the radiator, intake manifold, 4bbl carb, ignition module, coil, spark plugs, wires, altinator, and all of the filters as well as the starter, batterie, and solinoid....i am lost on this one guys.....any ideas? I dont wanna get stranded somewhere cause this is my daily driver
Repacing the Intake means the distributor was R&Red. If it is the timing...
1) Next time it is warm, unplug the vacuum advance vacuum line and plug it off. On the stock truck, the vac adv only comes on AFTER it warms up. It is worked by a thermally activated ported vacuum switch. The switch was likely removed with the old intake and not reused. If that helps, then you know the timing is the issue...
2) Also, loosen and slowly rotate the distributor counter-clockwise when this happens again. You may find that bypassing a ported vac switch is okay if you roll the timing back a smidge.
My guess tho: Are you running headers? I see this problem every single day at the parts store i work at for headers that over heat the starter. If that is the problem, a heat shield and maybe a wrap as well.
