My automatic transmission feels like it has no gears. The shift lever just goes up and down very easily. I checked right where the linkage goes into the transmission and it's okay. There is something wrong in the column, but I don't know where to start. Any ideas? It's a 74 F-100 V-6
So you had someone move the shift lever and you watched it physically move the linkage at the trans? Other than that physical check I'd say the column is fine and the problem is in the trans. Also you dont have a v6 in your truck its an 300 I6. Welcome to FTE. Good luck
If you move the shifter handle inside and do not see the tab move under the hood at the base of steering column then you need a new shifter column tube or have the "key" spot welded back to shifter column tube. There are two on the tube, one at the top and one at the bottom. Ever taken the steering column apart?
I just got this problem with my newest dent too. I can move the shifter back and forth and it will only click into one gear. And when someone moves the shifter for me it doesn't move the linkage at the end of the steering column. I had an extra column sitting around and took it apart and that makes it really clear to see what exactly happened to it, its the little "key spot" like they said before me, its going to be a slight pain to fix it but should be easy, it just will take a bit of time.

If the shift lever flops around, more than likely, the shift collar is broken, which is a common occurrence.
The shift collar is made from base (pot) metal, has a "bridge" made as part of it that connects the collar to the shift tube. The bridge breaks, the shift lever flops around.
D5TZ-7228-A (replaced C9TZ-7228-A & C5TZ-7228-A) .. A/T Shift Collar / Available from Ford.
MSRP: $65.98 // FTE sponsor PARTSGUYED.COM price: $47.51.
------------------------------------------------------------
The A/T shift tube has a rectangular piece of metal either welded, or sweated on to it...that locks the shift collar in place.
What happens is: This piece becomes detached from the tube. While shift tubes do fail, the collar is the more likely "suspect."
* The only F100's that came w/a V6 engine were 1982/83's.
Well its nothing to get too nervous about. Someone might get mad at my methods, but i don't care. I bought a harmonic balancer puller to take apart a motor just a week ago for 11 bucks, when i went to take apart the steering column i seen there were some bolt holes on the steering wheel, I put some bolts into the holes with the harmonic balancer puller attached, and it was off in 3 seconds, its not a "real" steering wheel puller, but it works as one for our type of trucks so why not?
