Well what do ya know, I actually got money back from the IRS for a change. I want to upgrade my truck to achieve two main things:
Get a better MPG
Get stronger towing capability up mountain hill climbs
I have a:
2001 7.3L F-350 Supercab Short Bed 4x4
190,000 miles
All stock engine and drivetrain
I have been looking at a 'kit' from Banks Power, but I am also considering just a Banks intake and guages, with a Bullydog tuner and a 5" exhaust.
I'm not set on anything yet, so I'd like to get input from you guys on what you have done to your trucks and what would you recommend or reject. I live in the communist country of California, so I have to pass the joke that they call 'diesel smog', which just means that it can't smoke too much and the changes have to be CARB approved.
Banks is alot of $$$'s personally and many on here will attest, you will need to decide where you would like to be, many such as myself, run 6637 filter setup Riffraff Diesel: RDP 6637 Filter Kit, then gauges, then a custom tuned chip for your needs such as DP Tuner Riffraff Diesel: DP Tuner It will net you about 300-350 HP and alot of fun! If you are looking purely for MPG's you need to look into your right foot. Want to go more extreme, add some single shot injectors GP38R turbo and a BTS trans and I'm sure you would be very pleased.
Rancho Cucamonga. SoCal. Are you in the neighborhood?

Thanks Alan. I appreciate your opinion. You've given me good advice in the past. I'll check out these toys.

X2. My opinion is that Banks are veryy expensive. They are very good I'm sure, but the kits are greater than the sum of their parts if you get what I mean.
You might spend (made up numbers for ease of comparison) $1000 on a Banks kit and get a "7 out of 10" or "8 out of 10" kit. Where as if you spend the same $1000 on a mix of other parts (such as a DP tuner, and other mods listed through out the fourm) you might get a 9 out of 10 set up.
Just my opinion though. Nothing bad about a banks except the price tag.
No problem its what we're all about, BTW did you ever get your ESOF issues figured out?
Ha! No. But I have chased it throughout the power feed to the switch motor. I am pretty sure that it is the GEM. I am going to get a second opinion before I take that leap.

Don't forget you can get a used GEM and have it reflashed for your truck if it turns out to be that.
No, we are up in Oregon, but we are having a Tech Day down in San Jose, CA June 18th if you are interested.
I have no problem hiking up to San Jose, but that weekend is already committed. I have been checking out your website. Nice stuff and good prices. We may have to do some business!

Thanks. I am picking up what you are putting down. That's what this post is all about. I noticed your signature showing 14 city and 18 hwy. I'd like to get to that point. I am getting 13 City and 15.5 Hwy. At $4.50 a gallon, I gotta find a better solution.

The biggest thing I can say about mileage is the pedal. I know its been over stated a million times but stay off the pedal. I've even moved my seat back so I'm further from the pedal. I keep the RPMs under 2k constantly and have no issues. We drive a 7500lb truck, people shouldnt expect up to get off the line quick at a stop light. That and cruise control in the right lane draft off semi trucks and dont be afraid to obey the speed limit
