I have a question about my 4wd low dash light. I have a 98 Ford explorer sport with 95k miles. When I turn the vehicle on i can see all the dash lights come on including the 4wd low light but when the engine is on and i switch to 4 high the light comes on on the dash but when I put it in 4 low the light does not come on. Could this be just a problem with the light or the 4wd switch? And is there a way I can test to make sure the vehicle is even going into 4 low since this is my first 4wd any info would help. thanks
How are you engaging the 4low? If you're just switching from 4hi to 4low, then it won't work. Try this: Make sure the vehicle is in 4hi. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop. Put your transmission lever in neutral, and THEN swith into 4low. You should hear a clunk, and the 4low light should come on. When you put in drive and move forward, you'll know you're in 4low! To get back into 4hi, you have to reverse the procedure: stop, shift into neutral, switch to 4hi, shift back to drive. Make sure you hear some clicks, and that the light goes back to 4hi.
Ford sets it up this way for a reason: Imagine you're in 2WD or 4HI, going down the freeway at 65 mph. The person in the passenger seat reaches over to turn up the volume on the radio, and grabs the 4WD switch by mistake, and switches to 4LOW. Can you say "self-destructing transfer case?" This stop-shift to neutral-switch prevents that from happening.
