'99 F150 XLT Surging/Bogging
Thanks to everyone for posting their findings and issues. It was most helpful to see other's issues and solutions.
Here's Mine:
My '99 F150 Ext. Cab w/ 5.4L V8 started surging and bogging down while going down the highway.
The truck felt as though it was being kicked in the rear, almost like driving over a rutted dirt road.
When the truck was in Neutral or Park the engine would run normally, rev normally etc... The bogging/surging only occurred while under load.
The dealer discovered the Num. 4 Coil Wire was misfiring.
I also had them clean the fuel system and replace the fuel filter.
What I difference! The Coil Wire was only failing after the truck was warm and the engine RPM was over 1500.
WARNING!!
A SINGLE COIL WIRE IS ~$100. OUCH! What happened to the days when you could buy all 8 plug wires for $50.
Changed the coil on #5 and problem solved. (PS - wholesale price from Ford is $45/coil).
Changed the plugs while I wa at it - Bosch platinums, took me three hours, and I did remove the fuel rail to do it.

That's good info for others.

dtilden have you had to do much work under the engine cover in your van? I find it easiest to pull out the front seats to do most things under there. They both come out in about 5 minutes and it sure makes it easier to work
Haven't done any engine work up till now, and this was a half in, half out job. I sure will remember your tip next time I need to get into the motor from the inside.
