shifter play

ok, i had a ranger that had this problem but this was 10 years ago.. i have a 3 speed ..now i know that a shifter should be pretty tight, but mine when in gear, the stick is all over the place. what do i do to get it back to normal..or is this the way it should be?

is it a three on the tree
if so check where the shift lever goes into the column chances are the pot metal around the ball on the end of the shifter is worn out
