My trans has been acting up some recently when im on it hard it will slip and also sometimes when accelerating hard it will shift really hard. I try not to do this too often to it. Had a fluid change fairly recently an this is the stock trans with no work. Since i figure its heading down its last road in the next while i was wondering what i should do.
I know i would want a bts but i am unsure of funds as of now an what i will be able to afford. Other than bts what are my options an what do they cost.
How much do they cost (reman, bts, rebuild, etc) just wondering about what ill be facing
For a BTS plan on around 5k, that will be a new cooler (6.0) and full install or shipping. You can get areman Ford for around $3200 or a HD4R100 for $4100 both with 3 year unlimited miles warranty (installed price). You can pick up a John Wood Towmaster for around $4200 also. Beyond that, I would not place my money anywhere else. As you will find the prices not any better and the service will most likely be less.
Now don't take those prices to heart! They are ballpark quotes from previous posts and calls I have made. If you are looking at a Ford transmission, call Parts Guy Ed up and see what kind of deal he can make you!
I recently had mine rebuilt by a local guy here, beefed up lots of internal parts, and went with a triple disc billet torque convertor, installed was around $3600. Would've cost me ballpark $5k to do a John Wood shipped here, and installed locally. IF you can swing it, do the John Wood or a BTS.....they are bullet proof, I am very happy with my rebuilt one so far, I've only got around 800 miles on it so far, did a bit of towing....so far so good Good luck!
i god a oem ford one and i got a buddy that get all parts for cost so i had mine go out on a thrusday and that friday i was up and rolling again 2000 dollars later with 3 year unlimtied milage warrenty
I went with a local rebuild just under a year ago for $2500.
I just called BTS to schedule an appointment yesterday because its on its way out already. Going to get it done right this time....

Agreed!!! I see way too often.
Now, IMO, a BTS or John Wood are the only way to go, no matter how much horsepower you throw at it, whether stock or 500+. You will NEVER have to worry about your transmission again. It may be a lot of money now, but it will save you in the long run and prevent you making a thread on here stating, "Man, i wish i would have listened to you guys, my trans just went out again after only one year!!" Be careful with those 3 year unlimited mileage warranties from Ford or anywhere else. NO ONE and i mean NO ONE can Match BTS or John Wood, period! Those to gentlemen stand behind their product like no one else.
I would say it depends on you. What are your plans for the truck? A lot of people say "Well, I am not racing or hauling something that is 30000# so anything will work". I guess the question is what your peace of mind is worth.
Say you are fixing the truck to dump it. WGAS whether it is done by Aamco or Billy Bob's Bar and Grill and Trans shop? The new buyer probably won't pay more for a well built trans and it might spook the buyer into wondering if you were sled hauling or racing it.
If you plan to keep it for a few years and you will not mod the truck, a Ford reman will work fine. If you mod it, you have to be prepared to have a tech like the few I know, go squeal to Ford about you being naughty and your warranty could be void. Not to say it will definitely happen but the possibility is worth mentioning.
I knew I would drive my truck into the ground unless something extreme happened. I knew I would mod the thing so I searched around. It came down to BTS or JW. BTS has been known to fix the trans AFTER the warranty of 2 yrs is over. Someone on another forum raced his truck and has it rebuilt 6 times over 8 yrs (Dockboy) and didn't pay for anything except when he broke his case. That clinched it for me since I know it is not a case of "if" but "when" as far as the trans breaking.
OTOH, Franko72 can introduce you to his local guy I'm sure that with more experience now, he'd be able to do it right?

Those are find for my Dad who doesn't mod the truck and uses it gently. OTOH, once you mod, they can yank the warranty. After all, I never said you could do those things and I will still pay for it. I said it works for a stock truck. You put more power thru it.
