I've been having what seems like a throttle issue on my 1992 F150 with the 302. I recently put long tube headers on it. Ever since, when I initially start the truck up, the rpms are way up almost like the throttle is stuck. I'm currently running open headers on it and was gonna take it to the exhaust shop today but am kinda scared to drive it. Any help is appreciated.
Is this a cold start or is the engine warm? My truck since I bought revs high when cold for about 2 minutes then regulates to normal idle which is 900-1000k. When I start up from a warm engine, the engine starts but drops revs almost dying out which I think that's from a warn out throttle position sensor which could be your issue too. Does it idle irregularly?
This is a cold start. It idled regularly before i redid my exhaust with the headers. Now it just idles extremely high and stays there. Sounds like the dang thing is about to blow up.
Well I'll have to check that out. I didn't think about that. I've heard 2 theories so far. I've heard that it could be a broken vacuum line from when i put the headers in and I've heard that it could be an unplugged or broken throttle position sensor.
If its literally revving the motor to the sky, its probably the the throttle cable is sticking. These trucks have plastic sleeves inside the spring on the end of the throttle cable. If they crack or break, the cable will not disengage completely when you let off the throttle, so it will stick and cause the truck to stay at higher rpms because the throttle cable cannot completely go back into the plastic sheath.
If its just a few hundred rpms above normal, Im willing to bet its the throttle position sensor. When these go bad or are disconnected, the truck will idle high and (sometimes) sputter under throttle.
And consider putting an o2 sensor back into your exhaust somewhere, it will help the truck run alot smoother
I went and sat in my truck today and noticed that my gas is almost all the way to the floor. I also noticed some slack in the cable near the pedal. Do u think this is my issue?
Yeah, definitely your problem. Like sated above, check the plastic sleeve inside of that ridiculous spring assembly. Those tend to be the culprit. When that happens to me I'll WD-40 the TC on top of the TB and on the pedal joints and it works out good.
If its not cracked or chipped and doesn't catch when you hold the throttle at the TB then you should be okay, however you said the white round plastic piece....are you talking about the part of the cable that actually attaches to the TB?
Well it doesn't look like it attaches right to the TB. It just goes around the cable near the TB. It has a coil wrapped around part of it. This peice is just cracked in 2 but it doesn't seem like its affecting the travel of the throttle cable. I'm gonna squirt some WD-40 in the spots like u said in a lil bit.
