Transmision problem C-6

Need help, I have a 89 EB 351 3 speed auto<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
<o></o>
I took my bronco off road and went down a steep hill. All of the sudden I had no transmission. I put on my breaks. I had no reverse, no 1st 2nd or 3rd. When I put it in Park it would grind, and click until it would go into park. Okay that is the systems. Here is what I thought. I thought that maybe I didn't have enough transmission oil and the incline was causing it not to pump and circulate. So I put in two quarts of fluid. No it did not fix it. My buddy looked at it and he thought I had a strain on the linkage which was not allowing it to go into gear. We got a tractor and pulled it out and soon as I got it out the transmission worked perfect. So I thought maybe he was right. So I started driving home. Went over a railroad track and my trans went out again. Just like before. Could anybody help me with this problem?<o></o>

Thanks<o></o>

Could have been a situation that caused the pump to lose prime the first time but the symptoms and timing of the second occurrence make it sound more like a linkage issue. Perhaps you have something loose or slipping that it allowing the shift lever on the column to function but the movement of the shift lever internal to the trans to slip. IT honestly sounds like a mechanical issue more than hydraulic simply because just running over RR tracks shouldn't cause the pump to lose prime... unless the fluid is seriously low, seriously thin, or the pump is working intermittently.

are you sure your Tcase isnt slipping into neutral? check your tranny/tcase mountsk, if they are worn out could be causing this issue.

if you put the tcase in neutral and pass thru the gears in the tranny and then place into park it will grind.

All linkege from the column shifter to the trans is working tight. When I crawl under the truck and some one shifts through all the gears the lever moves on the trans ( or tbox) can't remember if the lever is direct into the trans or the transfercase, there were lots of weeds. But it definitly would shift the lever into all positions. Could there be something right in side of the transmission that is not allowing it to go into gears? and yes, everytime you put it into park you have to push hard and it starts to grind and slow down then the lever will pop into park. Everytime.

Ok Kemicalburns, i re read your post and understand it now. Good thing to check. I did not even think about the transfercase being in neutral. I will do that test about the puting the tcase in neutral and running through the gears tonight. But I did while on the slope try puting the tcase in low 4x4. while standing on my tire on the slope I was playing with the shifter and actually got it to go into gear. Then when I got it the truck to drive it out of the steep road, it poped out of gear and then I have no more gears till we got it up on level ground.

NO, dont do that. what i am saying is the symptoms you are experiencing is like the tcase is in neutral already. so with the key on but motor off put the tranny in neutral and put the tcase into neutral and then back into 2hi. put the tranny back into park and start the truck and then select first or drive doesnt matter. have you also checked to make sure the vacum lines havent come off of the vacum modulator?

take and clean the undercarrage, sounds like its pretty dirty.

Yup. The Park ratchet and pawl on the trans output shaft are designed to click in and hold the output shaft of the trans, when you put it into Park with your foot on the brake AND the driveline is stopped.

If you stop on an incline, put it into Park, take your foot off of the brake, sometimes you will roll a little bit downhill until the pawl clicks into one of the notches in the Park "gear".

This is all designed to work at a stop, not with the trans shaft spinning along. If the transfer case drive (or any other part of the driveline after the trans, for that matter) is disconnected, then when you have the engine running, your foot on the brake, in gear, the output shaft of the trans is still being turned by the engine, since a connected braked driveline is not there to stop it. Then when you put it into Park, the linkage jams the parking pawl onto a rapidly spinning Park "gear", causing the crunch. That won't last long till something breaks.

So a transfer case that is disconnecting is what you need to troubleshoot, as Kemicalburns says.

Thank you Kemicalburns and Torky2, I think you guys are right on track. So I need some more information. The Bronco is still sitting at my friends house, so I havent had time to work on it. Tomorrow morning I am heading out there. My questions are:
  1. What and where do I fine the tranny/tcase mountsk I don't know what a mountsk is? for all I know kemica may have a typo
  2. If it is the mountsk... is it easy to replace
  3. as for Torky2 where is the Park ratchet and pawl?
  4. To fix these things will I need to drop the transmission?
  5. How do I troubleshoot a trasfer case that is diconnecting?
If you guys could help me understand a little better I think I can fix this with out having it towed to a trainie shop.

Thanks for all your help

Paul
