Interior lights?

The Interior Lights should come on when you open the door correct? Mine don't, the cargo light comes on when I open the door but the interior lights don't. If I shut the door then turn the lights on inside, they work; Open the door and they cut off. Any ideas where the kink in the wiring might be? I have no idea why it would be like this. It's been like that since I bought the truck, never really thought much about it but would like to get to the bottom of this problem!

Have you checked the bulbs and fuses, or looked to see if a previous owner might have unplugged them?

Lightbulb

I think that the switch in the door is bad.

Does it happens only with one door?

Same thing with both doors. Fuses should be alright, the fuse panel thing says the dome light and cargo light is all the same fuse, which they work. The door switch should be alright I would guess, it cuts the dinger off, so im stumped kinda??

In a way it almost acts like its wired up backwards... If I turn the interior lights on inside the cab with the door shut then, open the door, the cut off.

How do you turn "ON" the interior lights inside the cab?
Headlight switch or separate switch on overhead light?
How many interior light are we talking about?
Do you have the key-less entry option?

Light looks like this, has one switch on each side. 2 position switch. I don't have a keyless entry option on my truck. Might've had a key fob at one time. The switches will activate the light if the door is closed. But if they are on and I open the door, they will shut off.

Is that light after market or factory installed?

Here is an online manual that shows the factory wiring ...

1996 Bronco/F-Series Workshop Manual

Click on section 17 - Lighting
Click on section 17-02 Lighting Interior
Under Diagnostic and Testing click on Electrical Schematics - Courtesy Lamps

As you can see the wiring scheme is dirt simple for interior lights. There are three paths to turn them on ...

1. Drivers door switch
2. Passenger door switch
3. Headlight switch (dome)

I have no idea if the light is aftermarket or not. I bought the truck as is from another owner that was not the Original owner. Thx for the link to the Manual. Maybe I can figure something out with it!

That's an OEM light. Have them in both my 96 and 97.

I just went outside an checked something. The "Courtesy lights" work in the bottom of the doors, the bulbs were just burnt out. They activate normally. But shouldn't the overhead light come on also? That is the main thing i am trying to figure out.

I'm not familiar with the overhead light switch configuration. You might try different switch positions on the light to see if the door switch will activate it. Maybe Chase knows which position they should be.

Me either. I've tried the switch in both positions, no dice. Least I figured out those courtesy lights in the doors work. Kinda forgot they were there. Cases are busted though... gona havta dig up another set.

There's 3 bulbs in that overhead light. One in the middle that is supposed to come on when the door is open, and one on each side that is supposed to come on when the switch is flipped. I'd have to go look at my truck but I believe the way yours are now should be off. The bulbs in those are funny, they are a big tube kind of like the glass tube fuses but bigger.
I have no idea where the wiring all goes or how it ties into the door switch, but maybe once I get Whitey a bit further apart I'll be able to figure it out.
