hey guys. just curious what the bore and stroke of a 6.9 is. specifically the stroke. i know the bore is 4 inches. are there any real differences between the 6.9 and 7.3 heads, or a specific reason 7.3 turbo heads cant be used on a 6.9? and i know this is gonna raise some major discussion: can a 460 crank be put in a 6.9?? i know, beyond a shadow of doubt, that the crank can handle more power than an IDI is capable of producin, so thats no concern. i just wanna know if it will fit in the block.
The 7.3 takes a 1/2 inch head bolt, and the 6.9 takes a 7/16 head bolt. You can't redrill the 6.9 block to fit the 1/2 bolts as the thread pitch is different between the two sizes. Maybe a set of custom ARP studs would work, but I have never heard of anyone doing so. The valves from a 7.3 turbo will drop right into the 6.9 heads though. I think Dave S is running them in his "not exactly stock" 6.9.
I doubt the 460 crank would work in a 6.9, as the 6.9 was built by International Harvester. But I learned long ago not to say never. It depends on how much you want to spend.
I don't understand why one would want to put a 460 crank in the 6.9/7.3? I have heard that it is possible to put 7.3l heads on the 6.9l, but not the other way around. It sounds like you have crazy thougts up your sleeve. If you would like a great runner 7.3l Factory turbo, I have one for sale. PM me for details.
dark horse, unless im recallin incorrectly, the 7.3 has the 4.11 bore. thank you for the stroke spec.
perk, the reason i ask bout the 460 crank is cause they are common, and inexpensive, and i dont know of any manufacturers that make a stroker crank for the 6.9 and 7.3.
did they ever put the screw in controller on the drivers side head on a 7.3? if not then my last engine had 6.9 heads on a 7.3 block. Not saying it was right or should have worked but the truck ran strong till it blew its head gasket.
they used to make stroker cranks for the idi i have one
but they were for pulling use only after 95 or so and dies out a few years back
but the stroker i have is a noticable difference from a stock truck
There is a member that has an improved cam for the IDI engines that seams to make a big difference in power. its is possible he might be able to get you a crank from the same source. here is a link to a thread about the cam: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...-cam-typ4.html
If nothing else it is info you should consider if you are that deep into the engine.
thank you as well dark horse. ive also joined oil burners, and sent a PM to typ4. i have yet to hear back. seems they dont like answerin PMs that much over there... lol.
EDIT: i read into the first page on that thread, and its seems, at least from the conversation, that an IDIs weak link is its cam, AND that it suffered from the sickenin emissions retard that the gassers did as well. thank you very much for makin the little mad scientist in my mind come off his rocker again...

No they did not leave the factory that way but the water port that controller screws into is present on all IDI engines
