Question Misc simple 460 questions HELP

HI all,

Just replaced my water pump 21 yr old figured it was time. I've got some simple questions. I've got a 1982 e-350 rv with a 460 and 42k miles.

1.. Thermostat - Put in a new 195 thermostat. Was this too high? Should I have used a 180 . Saw on another thread that 220 is too hot, havn't run yet but what should it run at then?

2. Temp Gage- I'm going to put in an aftermarket temperature gage. From the looks of it the factory one is in the intake manifold, very close to the front on the right side. Am I right? I'm thinking I'll just replace it with my new aftermarket one.

3. Smog Pump - Will I have any problems if I leave the belt off of the smog pump. I'm not worried about passing inspection or killing the environment (drive less than 2k miles a year and don't have cat's from the factory)

Thanks in advance everyone

Dave

Misc simple 460 questions HELP

What temp was the thermostat that you removed? Most factory ones are 195. I personally prefer a 180.
Yes the temp sensor is in the front right side of the intake.(Usually a red wire)
It won't hurt anything to remove the belt, it may cause the pump to lock up from lack of use. No more power than it draws, I would leave it hooked up. This will help keep the exhaust from trying to come out of the pump if a one-way valve were to fail.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I think the thermostat was 195, it was factory and parts guy said 195 was factory. Correct me if I'm wrong, if the thermostat is 195 then at 195 it opens up and lets coolant through the radiator right? That would mean that the operating temp would be at least 195 and probably hotter like 205-215 at least? Is this how it works.

The smog pump doesn't turn smoothly, maybe that's how it is designed to operate, it also weighs a ton. I was thinking if I removed it to just plug the tube that plugs into the back of the pump. It injects air into the back of the heads right? I guess I could plug it there.

Thanks again!!!!

If memory serves me right the thermostat will be full open by 195 degrees. It actaully starts to open up around 160-165 degrees which allows for the fluid to circulate rather then boil if you run straight water. Also you can plug the back of the heads in two fashions, either a pipe plug after you tap the holes or you can install caps that will be retained using the "c" clips. Just remember to use hi-temp rtv if you use the caps.

Do you have the Catylitic converters on your rig? If the smog pump isnt putting air into the cats, They will plug up after time. I would remove them at the same time as the pump just to be safe

No, the vehicle is a e-350 rv and doesn't have cats from the factory. Good Point though, thanks
