Strange charging issue
a few days ago I replaced the fuel filter and found that it was spraying everything down with diesel and before I got the chance to fix the problem today I noticed that I was loosing amps as I drove. At Idle it seemed to charge more and actually gained some amps back but when trying to start it was dead. I jumped started it and drove for a few miles after fixing the leak prior to cleaning the engine and voltage guage went flat with instrument lights comming on and no power windows. I made it home ok and let it idle got my power windows back and panel lights went away but still not enough juice to start. Batteries are about a year old alternator is 2 years old all connections are tight.
Told ya it was weird I mean if rpms are higher it should charge better not drain the bats right??
Any thoughts as to why this is happening??
Thanks
I'm suspicious of the way the problem appeared after your fuel spray. Have you considered the possibility that the belt may be slipping? I'd clean the pulleys and belt with degreaser and spray the bejeezus out of the alternator with electrical component cleaner.
If that doesn't work, have the alternator tested. You may have a bad voltage regulator or diode pack.
I will post results. On another note it seems that every other filter change I get a strange rubber gasket. The normal one that I am used to is the standard squared off flat one but last one was a wedge shaped and the filter had an additional screen attached to the cap. is that the right one and just dif brand or did advance sell me the wrong one
