Yesterday my aunt was towing her tt in her '06 6.0 and her check engine light came on. When she got back to town she called "her" shop and they threw the truck on the 'puter. This is how I understood what she was told. The turbo was running underpowered, per the code. She has to wait to get it into be actually looked at. She did not notice any strange sounds, smells, or vibrations. The only thing she noticed was a slight bit of power loss at highway speeds. Now this shop is fairly honest and they get a lot of return business because of that. Do any of you fine folks have any ideas of what this is, with the limited info I was able to give? Any help would be great... Thanks in advance, gabe
Well it sounds like the unison ring is sticking or rusted in the turbo it may need to be cleaned look here Diesel Technician Society also i would look at the egr valve it may be messed up does she run cetane boost in the fuel and tell her once a week drive it like she stole it to keep them clean Also may have went into a limp mod because the temp spread was greater than 15* between the EOT and ECT the oil cooler may be getting plugged also.

She probably had a P0299 code. Over/under boost. I had the same thing. Found it testing a code reader. I had no symptoms at all. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the turbo under warranty.
If she is not going to do the turbo rebuild herself and she is out of warranty, I think she would be much better off getting a new Garrett Powermax turbo ($1100-1200) rather than paying to get a turbo rebuilt (probably $1000). Confirm the turbo is the problem first of course.

Hey DieselPop you were spot on with the turbo needing cleaning. She was even told by her Mechanic. She needed to push the engine more then once in a while. Thanks for the solid advice
