I just bought a 79 F150 that has 3/4 ton axles. My question is, The coils springs, one looks like its about to spring out. The bottom plate the coil sits on is rusted about 3/4 wat through. My Question is whats that plated called? And where can I find a another one? Also it lookes like the coil was welded to the plate. Do they sell springs with plates welder to them. Im a beginner at this so if you answer remember Laymans terms here.
Thanks

You can get the whole rig in a scrapyard. Look around, there may be one laying on the ground or half removed where someone has liberated some springs...
This may apply to other years, but I know from 73 to 75 the spring is not welded to the spring cup. The spring just sits on top of the cup and has 1 1/8 nut on top of a big washer holding it down. I would highly suggest soaking that nut liberaly with penetrating oil before you try to take it off. Support your frame on jack stands with a hydraulic jack under the I beam. Take the shock loose, and that big nut. Then VERY slowly lower the jack. Make sure not to let the jack down to fast or that spring may fly out and hit you. It sounds a lot more difficult than it is. It is actualy a very simple procedure, as long as your careful with your jack stands and jack. You will need to get a wrench to go between the coils of the spring. It's next to impossible to get a socket on it.
