You need to identify the noise. Is it a rattle or a hole in the muffler sound?

It's a misfire problem. The flashing CEL is a warning that the misfire is sever enough to damage the catalytic converters if you continue to drive it.

Well first don't start it again unless you absolutely have to. Second is to to rent/borrow a code scanner if you don't have one and pull codes. Should tell you what is going on in this situation at least.

If it's the cats, all you can do is replace them. Get it scanned by a good shop or mechanic before you start throwing money at it. Remember, the advice and diagnostics you get on any forum is free and may not be Gospel. You get what you pay for, if you're lucky.

Your first step is to connect a code scanner and get the trouble codes. Knowing those will allow us to give you the best advice on what to check. We'll try and give you more than what you're paying for, despite what negative Nancy above me said!

Why would the cats be causing the misfire?

Again, scan the codes and find out what is wrong first.

Alloro, it seems that you are the only one mentioning a "misfire".

It's a misfire because his CEL is flashing. That's why the CEL flashes, to warn you of a sever misfire.

That would be the EGR hose. I'm hoping at this point he has done a thorough visual check and identified anything like that...

It would be nice to know what he found to be the problem.
