Looking for some first-timer help

I'm looking for an old Ford truck. That's pretty much all I know. It will basically be my part-time drive to work. I want a long bed, like the older style, 70s I guess. Any years or engine styles or anything else to look out for? Thanks

Well, people here are going to be partial to the '73-'79 Fords. Built like tanks and all the aerodynamics of a concrete block.
If you decide on a "dentside" look for rust. Regular cab, floorpans and cab corners are places rust likes to really eat into along with rocker panels and the wheel arches over the rear tires. Super and crew cabs rust also in the roof along the drip rail.
If your concern is to also get good fuel mileage....well, uh....maybe you should look someplace else. Mileage for a 2WD is in the 10-14 range (with luck and a tail wind). 4WD even worse. But they ARE fun to drive.
BTW welcome to FTE, lots of good people here.

Definitely want a 4 wheel drive. I'm not concerned with gas mileage. Just trying to get a decent reliable truck for under $5000 that's not too far from home.

Knowing where 'home' is might be a big help, then.

well yes knowing where "home" is it might help us, but for under $5000, is pretty common in these parts of kentucky, i just happened to find my 79 for $200 () and there is hardly no rusted through spots, just mostly surface rust. One thing about old trucks, no matter what year, make, model, what kind of motor... there is constantly work needed. If you are looking for a decent truck that runs good but has some rust it may be fairly hard but like we said, depends where you live.
