I've always been leery of auto trannies to begin with but since u can't get an fx truck with a stick I had no choice..I have seen a lot of people on here with rebuilt trans and im wondering I can hope to get out of mine. So far at 77k miles she is doing great.
It is a toss up some have issues and others go with no trouble at all. Mine is at 71k or something and I have had no problems. Just keep changing that fluid on a regular basis and you should be fine.
I have 110k and no issues. A friend of mine has a twin to my truck with 150k no issues as well. Nothing is for sure but without alot of heavy towing and with regular service 150-200k should be no problem.
I've never had a problem with Ford trannys, I change the fluid every 50k and they work just fine. My dad has 150k on his F150 and hasn't touched the tranny except to change the fluid and this truck sees alot of heavy towing.
When you guys change the fluid do you just drop the pan and re-fill and repeat to try and change all the fluid? I am not sure you can drain the converter to get a total change. Also what are you guys using for fluid?synthetic?
I open up the trans cooler lines and drop it into collection jug. Start and idle the engine 10-15seconds to pump the tranny dry before dropping the pan.
About 6-7qts get pumped out if I remember right. It spares the mess of fluid dripping all over the place as the pan comes off too. Once the pan is cleaned up, new filter put in, and reassembled, I fill it up with new fluid. Idle the engine for a few more seconds until what's left of the old fluid comes out and new fluid starts coming out. It all comes out pretty quick, so pay attention. Reconnect the cooler lines, top it off, and I've essentially done a complete flush. In all, if I remember right, 9-10qts of old comes out before the new stuff comes out. I think total capacity was 13 or something assuming it's dry filled.
I stick with Mercon5 spec'd in the manual. 67K on the rig now, last change was at 30K. No issues, and it's just about prime time to do it again
The first time I dropped the pan on my van to drain it .
I took advantage of having the pan off to drill a hole in the low point and installed a drain port.
Changed the filter with the fluid change.
My torque converter has a drain plug in it.
