I have changed alternator because low battery and no output on the old alternator. But somehow now I have lost ignition, glow plugs, headlights. Only power to the dash seems to be emergency flashers. Read some blogs, I have changed relays in engine compartment fender well. Also external regulator. What might be my problem? Am looking at the glow plug controller, but it seems like it should be something other than that. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
I am betting that you changed the alternator without pulling the battery cables off first. If that's true, you might have accidentally grounded the alternator output wire and blew some fusible links. Check at the starter solenoid on the inner fender. You will find smaller wires over there with colored rubber things in the wire. These are fusible links, make sure they are not burnt in two.
Thanks, you are betting right--and I am in damage control. The links are not burnt in two, but seems I don't have current on both sides of the link--so tomorrow I am going to town and see about these links and replacing them correctly?!? Thanks again so much for your help---Poppa
If you don't have power on either side, follow the wire upstream to the battery +. They usually have these smaller wires underneath one of the large studs that goes to the battery + on the solenoid. There may be a main fusible link hiding under a larger wire that goes to one of the larger stud connections.
A 9" 14 ga. universal fusible link by -BUSSMANN- . Located @ RH fender solenoid has me powered up & running .THANKS ALOT Dave !!!! Next I need to focus on glow plugs & preheating. For quite some time I have plugged in to 110 for my morning start. Now I am using my f-250 3 & 4 times/week instead of once a month. I need to try to get this right as well. Where should I start? I do have power @ the glow plug relay w/click & power moving to glow plug controller w/dash light on 3-5 seconds no morning start. I plug into 110 about 1 hour & I get a immediate start. That is where I am @ w/that. THANKS AGAIN. poppa randy.
You may have some burned out plugs, and also these older controllers are noted for sticking and burning out all your plugs. My advice would be to bypass the controller and use a manual button.
Heres a good thread on the old system, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...old-style.html
And use only MOTORCRAFT/BERU plugs number ZD1-A all others will swell when they burn out and make removal difficult and in some cases causes the removal of the haed too.
