Gas in a Deisel

Hey Guys,
I have a question for ya. 2010 F-350 deisel with about 50K miles. I have a friend who pumped about 9 gallons of unleaded gas into her tank and drove it about 8 miles. The truck started running really rough so she shut off. Then it would not restart. She called the dealer and they told her it would cost $13,000 to fix it, not sure what all that entails except a new truck maybe.
My question is how much gas in a deisel is too much to where it would cause harm? Also what damage could be done in the situation described above. Any ideas on what could be wrong or what to do to fix this? I know I didn't provide many details on the symptoms but I am not sure of them myself. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

That sounds about right.

Sorry...

You didn't say whether or not she was topping off, or if the tank was bone dry and just threw some fuel in or somewhere in between; but that doesn't really matter, she's hosed.

That's very similar to what's been heard before for similar misadventures. That price is likely to replace the entire fuel system, from the tank to injectors and flushing the tank. Seeing as how the truck was actually driven some distance and now won't restart, I'm kind of surprised the dealership said the motor wasn't toast.

I'd be real concerned about dropping that kind of money for the fuel system repair without some reassurance from the dealer that there's no evidence of further damage and once the repair's done it will be good as new...

I have seen a couple file with insurance and get it covered.

I also know of one that drained the tank, put new filters in, fuel conditioner and was able to save it. He had a mix with diesel though.

That is a hard pill to swallow.

I went to a bp station in fla. One time and started to pump. Mid grade ...I almost poured 4 gallons before I noticed (stupid green handles)....I filled the rest with diesel and had zero problems.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll pass on the info, I do believe she was topping off. But not 100% sure. Knock on wood I've never done that to my 7.3, I would be just sick, guess I am kinda **** about grabbing the right handle.

If you did it on a 7.3, it wouldn't be near as big of a problem.

I had a full service station pump in 2.5 gallons of gas into my almost empty truck before they caught it. They then drained almost 4 gallons back out, filled with diesel and conditioner and all seemed fine for the next 6k and them the HPFP went out. Maybe this was coincidence, maybe not. The point is there is no amount that is OK. Some get lucky and some don't. If I were her I would try to do as said earlier. Drain, change the filters, and condition and see how it goes.

Well, I since learned her truck was almost on E and she pumped around $48 into it. Gas around here is $4 a gal so around 12 gals of straight gas into an almost empty tank. Then drove it for a few miles, the trucks started sputtering and when she pulled over it died. She contacted her insurance company and they said they would cover the repair bill less her deductable of $500! I have 333k on my 7.3 I wonder if I could get a deal like that????

Good for her though.
