(A personal favorite) Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling 'Son of a B*TCH!' at the top of your lungs. It is also, most often, the next tool that you will need.
Glad I had my SOB tool just in case, just pulling the spring out seemed logical, but we now how often logic works. Was surprised the parts store didn't know when I picked them up this morning
When I replaced mine I just twisted and pulled the spring off.
I put a new spring in a new boot, greased both ends and put the boot on the COP. Now I'm thinking about it again... is the spring supposed to attach to the COP? Or does it just compress between the spark plug and the COP, thus making contact? That's what I did, and I haven't had any problems yet...

I pulled the spring out of the coil, then pushed the new spring in place and made sure it was seated then put the boot on the coil. There may have been enough compression on the spring when you installed the coil that it set the spring into the coil, if it wasn't I'm pretty sure you would have had problems right away
