Hi, just joined, wanted to get a few suggestions on some ideas I had. I found a rough 1966 F250 4x4 with what the owner says is a 390. Regardless if it's a 352 or a 390, I wanted to make it a 428. My biggest concern is trying to find an appropriate transmission. What transmissions other than the factory 4-speed have others used on their vehicles? I still want to keep it manual, 4x4, and I do like the idea of an overdrive transmission. Any suggestions? thanks

A popular conversion with the 4X4 crowd is the New Venture NV4500 it is a 5 speed with 5th being an over drive, it is the trans used in the Dodge Cummin's turbo Diesel, so it can handle big torque. It is a pretty easy swap on an FE.. if you use the search function, you can search a few others who have done this.. I have an FE, and I am planning to do this conversion very soon, Summit racing has the adapter plate, and then you need to use a different clutch , but it still uses your stock bell housing. It is the best of the new tech, with a short throw 5 speed and it will accept quite a few transfer cases You can find rebuilt ones from $1000- 1500 on Ebay, and even at local trans shops! It is used in many Ford, Chevy and Dodge heavy duty pickups as a regular factory transmission. The other popular choice is Tremec, but many of them can only handle 300 ft lb of torque and they can get darned pricey! Do a Google search on NV4500 transmissions, you will find a lot of good info. Have fun with it!
