I have been doing a full restoration on a 79 f150 2wd. I'am at the pint of my wiring harness. My truck will start and run but it starts funny. Let me explain. When turning the key it will crank all day and never fire, the second you let go of the key it hits and fires. Along with this, something is pulling current from my battery over night. I put a test light between my postive post and the postive cable and the light, lights up bright. I pulled fuses one at a time and the test light nevr went out. I'am at my wits end, and dont want to move on with my project untill I fix this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Robert-
lol I've had that only sparks when you stop cranking problem on LOTS of Fords.....I can never remember what the problem was though! Let me know what you find!
First thing today I jump a wire from the battery to the coil and the truck fires perfect. I get my uncle to show him I fixed the problem and the truck just cranks and cranks. AS soon I let go of the key it hits. At this point I'am ready to push it out side with a for sale sign.(I could never do that)I go to check the I wire on the relay and there is none. I go home and look at three trucks and a bronco and they are all wired the same. I still have no clue what to do,it's like truck never does the same thing twice. I think I'am chasing a demon around.
if you change the ignition switch that should fix the starting.
As for your power draw, Reconnect your test light then unplug voltage regulator.
If light goes out change your voltage regulator.

what happens if you have the key on, and you ground out the (-) side of the coil, then let off? keep doing that on/off/on/off. Does it spark everytime you open the circut back up? if it does then you know your not getting the signal to the coil. Then you look at is it the box, pickup-coil, or wiring. I've never heard of changing a pick-up coil in one of these, It's possible, but I would doubt it. An ignition box is only $20 new. Those are just some thoughts. If it sparks when you turn the key back, it's getting that signal! So I wouldn't blame the ignition switch....Am I right for thinking that anyhow?
I FIXED IT!! I put a pickup coil and that fixed the starting problem. Then I replaced the voltage regulator on the passanger side fender well and that stoped the drain of the battery. Now its time to move on to finish the truck Thanks for the help guys.
