00, f250, 2wd, 221450 miles, would like to change the rear dif fluid and the tranny fluid. I got the truck when it had 194768 miles and I have no clue if it was ever done before. So my question is should I and if so what fluid should I go with. Also anything else I should do, oil was done, a couple days ago.
I would do it.. It is easy and probably the most neglected maintenance item "ever"
Ordered a 08 finned aluminum cover from Ed. $60.
Stopped by the hardware store for longer bolts. (used stainless socket head cap screws/washers)
Stopped by Napa to picked up oil and friction additive and gasket goop (forget what goop i used)
Pulled the cover and let it drip over night.
Goop and new cover.
Filled with oil. Added a little additive. Think 4oz. Went for a drive. I think it needs a bit more additive due to having a slight vibration when turning with the heavy camper. Not to worried about it. It is so slight and barely noticiable. All this was a year ago or so.
Don't worry, you're not flushing the tranny with chemicals, just pushing new fluid through it, the cooler, and lines. Do both and you'll have a solid starting point for fluid maintenance .
FWIW, when I drained/filled mine I used a non-MotorCraft friction modifier. I never quite got rid of a slight chattter from the LS while turning. Drained/filled again using MotorCraft friction modifer and it was much better. And, yes I also used Full Synth LS Mobil 1 gear oil.
I used the same Valvoline gear oil as Dan and didn't have to add friction modifier. As you can see on the label it says Limited Slip
so it has some friction modifier in it, but in some cases additonal friction modifier is needed. Test before adding. To much friction
modifier and you will turn an LS diff into an open diff.
