I know this might sound stupid, but I have to ask. I have a 2001 F-250 Superduty, extended cab, 8 ft. box. 5.4 L auto trans. Last year I installed a <a href="http://motorhaven.autoanything.com/">Diablo</a> chip and noticed that my mileage actually increased from an average of 11 mpg, (city and highway combined), to a solid 14mpg.
As we all know, the oxygen gas that is used during the winter months kills our gas mileage. The last time I filled up, I tried that Sunoco 94 octane gas. So far, I seem to be getting better mileage than with the regular 93 octane.
Has this ever happened to anyone else? What kind of mileage can I expect when the normal gas returns?
I used to have one of those other manufacturers vehicles, ('79 Chev Balzer) it had a 400 small block in it and delivered really lousy gas mileage. I had some lake property that was 250 miles from my home so I travled up there a lot. When leaving LA one friday my usual refilling station was out of the low grade stuff so I filled her up with the high octane. When I got to my destination I had gas left in my tank, I usually had to stop and refuel before I got there. It didn't take the full tank to get there but the nearest station was about 40 miles away so I usually refilled before I got there. I figured i got around 14 - 15 instead of the normal 9 -10. The way ocatane works it should not have happened. The octane is in the gas to slow the detination so you don't get that pre-ignition ping. The higher the octane the less change for that pre-ignition. Go figure........ Just though I share, still don't know why it happened......
