6.0 wont start/ keep running

My friend showed up to work today saying his truck wouldn't start. He was more than upset. So I asked him for the key. I turned the key on (heard the fuel pump) and cranked the motor. It started for about 10 seconds. It sounded like it was running on 4 cylinders. I waited a few minutes, and tried again. It just cranked and cranked with a few hopeful sputters in between. I dont smell diesel, nor do I see any leaks. The oil pressure guage went right up and it sounded like it wanted to start, but no-go. Any ideas?

Pull the eng fuel filter (near oil filter) and see if you have fuel in the bowl. Has he done any maint. on it lately? Like fuel filter change?

Finally got her started, I'm thinking a fuel filter issue. We'll find out tomorrow right? I could smell a lot of raw diesel out of the tailpipe (and see it). I dont like the assumption of it being a fuel filter. Anyone heard of this problem?

Sorry BPoFD, should have refreshed my page b4 replying. He was losing fuel about two weeks ago (smelling a leak). I investigated, and found the filter bowl cap cracked. He has a new one on order and double boubled the old one until it comes in.... I was thinking they were related, but dont see any leakage from the cap....
